💜 This Menopause Awareness Month, we're highlighting the importance of information, care and support for women experiencing medical menopause.
Menopause doesn't always happen at midlife. For some women, it begins suddenly as a result of cancer treatment or risk-reducing surgery.
At ANZGOG's recent National Gynaecological Cancer Priorities Roundtable, discussions highlighted a significant concern for women with a gynaecological cancer, including those who are diagnosed at a young age or with a high inherited risk of cancer: uncertainty about menopause care can become a barrier to treatment and risk-reducing surgery.
ANZGOG-supported research, including the WHAM (What Happens After Menopause?) study, is helping improve our understanding of the impact of medically induced menopause on quality of life, including sleep, mood, sexual wellbeing and overall health. By supporting research, we're helping generate the evidence needed to improve care, support informed decision-making and ensure women have access to the right information and support throughout treatment and beyond.
Women experiencing medical menopause following cancer treatment need continuity of care, with access to trusted information, evidence-based care and appropriate support throughout their journey.
Let's make conversations about medical menopause part of routine care, so every woman feels informed, supported and empowered to make the decisions that are right for her. 💜

💜 Today is World Cancer Research Day.
Every breakthrough in gynaecological cancer begins with research. But research doesn't happen alone.
This year's theme, Advancing Cancer Research Together, recognises the vital role that researchers, clinicians, people with lived experience, clinical trial participants, advocates and supporters play in driving progress.
For more than 25 years, ANZGOG has been conducting world-leading research to find better treatments and improve outcomes for women with gynaecological cancers. Today, our community of more than 1,650 members works together across Australia and New Zealand to advance research and improve the lives of women facing these cancers.
That spirit of collaboration was central to the recent National Gynaecological Cancer Roundtable convened by ANZGOG at Parliament House. Members joined leaders from government, research, healthcare, advocacy and lived experience to identify shared priorities for action, including how research can help close gaps in treatment, care and support.
We thank the researchers driving discovery, the clinicians delivering innovation, the trial participants helping shape the future of care, and the supporters whose generosity makes progress possible.
Together, we're advancing research and saving lives. 💜

💜 Today is World Gynecologic Oncology Day
This year's theme, Support Not Stigma, is a reminder that no one facing a gynaecological cancer should feel alone.
More than 3 million women worldwide are living with a gynaecological cancer, and over 1 million are diagnosed each year. Yet stigma, lack of awareness and delayed diagnosis continue to impact outcomes. While overall cancer survival rates in Australia have improved over the past 25 years, survival rates for gynaecological cancers have remained largely unchanged. Greater investment in research is critical to improving outcomes for people affected by these diseases.
We're working alongside people with lived experience, researchers, clinicians and advocates to improve treatment, advance research and raise awareness of gynaecological cancers.
Together, we can challenge stigma, raise awareness and invest in the research needed to improve outcomes.

💜 Today is Vulvar Cancer Awareness Day
Vulvar cancer is rare, but its impact is significant. Every day, another woman in Australia is diagnosed with vulvar cancer.
📊 The facts:
• 427 women are diagnosed with vulvar cancer each year in Australia.
• 126 women lose their lives to the disease every year.
• More than 1,500 women are currently living with vulvar cancer.
• While the five-year survival rate is 74.7%, delays in diagnosis can dramatically reduce survival outcomes.
Symptoms can include persistent itching, bleeding, pain or ulcerated lesions. Knowing what is normal for your body—and seeking medical advice when something changes—can support earlier diagnosis.
Research is also critical to improving treatment and quality of life.
ANZGOG, in partnership with the Canadian Cancer Trials Group, is leading the STRIVE clinical trial in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. The international study is investigating how the biology of vulvar squamous cell carcinoma—the most common form of vulvar cancer—can guide more personalised surgical treatment.
By examining whether a tumour is HPV-associated or HPV-independent, along with molecular markers such as p53, STRIVE aims to:
• Improve surgical decision-making
• Reduce the risk of cancer returning
• Avoid unnecessary additional surgery and its complications
• Strengthen treatment guidelines for vulvar cancer
The first Australasian trial site opened at Auckland City Hospital in January 2026 and is actively recruiting eligible participants.
On Vulvar Cancer Awareness Day, we recognise everyone affected by this disease and reaffirm our commitment to research that enables women to live better and live longer.

Yesterday, more than 40 leaders from government, research, healthcare and the community came together at Australian Parliament House for Australia’s first National Gynaecological Cancer Roundtable.
Convened by ANZGOG, the Roundtable was a powerful demonstration of what can be achieved through united action, bringing evidence, expertise and the voices of women with lived experience into the same room to identify how we can accelerate progress in gynaecological cancer.
We were pleased to be joined by The Hon Rebecca White MP, Assistant Minister for Women, Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care, and Assistant Minister for Indigenous Health, who opened and closed the Roundtable and reaffirmed the Australian Government’s commitment to listening to women and improving their health outcomes.
With 19 women diagnosed and six dying from a gynaecological cancer every day, and diagnoses projected to rise by 21 per cent over the next decade, the need for action is urgent.
Guided by the principles of Equity, Evidence and Enablers, discussions focused on two critical areas:
• Prevention and early diagnosis
• Living with cancer and care pathways
The depth, honesty and generosity of the discussion were extraordinary. We are especially grateful to the women who shared their lived experiences, ensuring that the challenges facing women and their families remained at the centre of every conversation.
The Roundtable was an important step in building consensus on the priority actions needed to improve prevention, diagnosis, treatment, care and support. ANZGOG will now work with participants to capture the shared priorities and build a clear pathway to turn them into action.
Thank you to Assistant Minister White, all delegates and especially the women with a lived experience who contributed their expertise, experience and commitment to this landmark gathering.
United action. Shared priorities. Better outcomes.

💛 Today is R U OK? Day.
A cancer diagnosis doesn't just affect physical health. It can affect every part of a person's life, including their emotional wellbeing.
For many people living with gynaecological cancer, the journey can feel overwhelming, isolating and uncertain. A simple check-in can make a meaningful difference.
It's also important to remember our medical community, including clinicians, nurses, allied health professionals and researchers who work tirelessly to care for and support people through treatment and beyond. Supporting others every day can take an emotional toll, and they may need a check-in too.
If someone is on your mind today, reach out. Ask how they're really doing. Take the time to listen.
💛 Because no one should have to face cancer, or support others through it, alone.

Radiotherapy is more than a treatment. It’s a team of highly skilled people working together with precision, expertise and care.
Today, on World Radiotherapy Awareness Day, we recognise the vital role radiotherapy plays in the treatment of many gynaecological cancers and the dedicated radiation oncologists, radiation therapists, nurses and wider multidisciplinary teams who make this possible.
For those diagnosed with a gynaecological cancer, radiotherapy can be an important part of their treatment, helping to control cancer, reduce the risk of recurrence and, in some circumstances, provide life-prolonging or palliative care.
Yet the expertise and complex work behind delivering radiotherapy safely and to the highest possible standard can often go unseen.
As an organisation dedicated to improving outcomes for people with gynaecological cancer, ANZGOG recognises the essential contribution of radiation oncology to multidisciplinary cancer care, and the people behind it.
Today, we thank the radiation oncology community for the skill, precision and care they bring to every patient’s treatment.
Together, through research, collaboration and innovation, we can continue to improve radiotherapy and outcomes for women with gynaecological cancer.
