This kind of use of LLM tech really excites me, because it's well matched for what that architecture is designed to do. Also, because we as humans don't have the first intuition about how animals might think or communicate, this seems like a fantastic tool to probe that space!
i think AI is about to uncover an entire hidden world of animal communication and what it's already found is insane... > AI found evidence that elephants call each other by name. when researchers played one its name-like call, it approached the speaker faster and called back more, revealing a form of personal naming once thought almost uniquely human > AI analyzed 53,993 marmoset calls and found tiny monkeys may use names too. entire families use similar labels for the same monkey, suggesting they learn names and dialects from each other > AI learned to tell what Egyptian fruit bats were arguing about: food, mating, sleeping spots or personal space. it could even partly identify who was shouting at whom inside a colony of thousands > AI discovered a “phonetic alphabet” in sperm whale clicks, with rhythm, tempo and tiny timing changes combining into at least 143 recurring patterns. their communication system is nearly 10x more expressive than scientists previously believed, and we still don't know what most of it means > an AI trained on 1.5 million zebra finch calls held real-time vocal exchanges with living birds, generating calls as they spoke and getting them to respond with the same timing and flexibility they use with other birds > Google trained an AI on decades of dolphin recordings to predict what sound comes next, then paired it with an underwater device that gives objects their own synthetic whistles. the goal is for a wild dolphin to copy a whistle to ask a human for a specific object, creating a tiny shared vocabulary between species > AI combined microphones worn by wild crows with nest cameras and uncovered quiet calls that may announce when a crow is arriving at the nest and help entire families coordinate caring for their chicks > a robot bee performed the waggle dance real bees use to share the direction and distance of food, and the bees changed their flight paths based on its instructions. researchers effectively sent a destination into a hive in bee language

Some time ago, I was curious what would happen if I tried to be totally neutral and entirely devoid of opinion or expertise, when asking an LLM to generate code. It resulted in an amusing sort of fiction (wait for the twist): antonm.net/string_reverse/
When operating LLMs in a conversational mode, it's clear that they are deeply subject to suggestion, and spend a lot of energy just following the implications built into the questions you ask. "Estimate this quantity." It does so, gives you a long explanation, and it seems convincing. "Wait, don't you think this number should be higher, because of reason X?" It will say yes of course, I didn't properly consider X, here is a higher answer. "Wait, don't you think this number should be lower, because of reason Y?" Yes of course. It will give you a lower answer. People use these for programming.

The only way any code ever gets better, is when some person, somewhere, writes it for the second (or ideally third) time. ...so then why is everyone so anti-rewrite?

My son found my old LEGO NXT. Put new batteries in, worked first try. Hotplug any motor/sensor. Software (from 2006) installed on Win10 no problem, no restart, no driver woes. Boots instant, UI resizes without jank. Bot hotplugs with USB, compiles/flashes the bot in <1sec.

Come watch me try to fix the ever so subtle bug with this rotational symmetry sometime :) (no seriously, come help please. it's so subtle)
Just a reminder that @antovsky and I stream dev work on our game via our discord quite often. Anton recently wrote a terrain editor live on the stream, if you'll look closely you'll notice it has rotational symmetry (important for balance) Link is at instructobots.com 🙂

That's some dedication! <3 I figured part of our job would be to wake Wookash up but at this rate I think he's gonna be more awake than us. Gonna have to bring the A-game.
In 9 hours we livestream a discussion on upcoming game by @nicbarkeragain and @antovsky My schedule: - 5am wake up & walk the dog - 5:30am espresso - 5:45am espresso (start stream, warmup) - 6am espresso - official start youtube.com/watch?v=RY59NKZZ

Come see a sneak peek of the game @nicbarkeragain and I have been working on! We're also doing a live podcast with @wookash_podcast about it tomorrow :) If you have any questions about the game/tech just reply here, and we can try to answer live on stream đŸ«Ą
The first video from the Handmade Network Expo is finally going live in just 30 minutes! @nicbarkeragain and @antovsky have joined forces in a game studio called Ostrich Effect, and today they're ready to show their first game: an RTS with a programming twist. Link in thread —

If you were ever curious about how 6DOF tracking works or what it takes to take "an idea" all the way to "product", this stream is for you :)
When @antovsky initially pitched the idea of doing a stream dedicated to PS move tracking tech I was
lukewarm. Old tech, not even AI.. Then Anton showed me his custom simulator he just made, told me a few stories
and I was instantly sold! This is legitimately a love letter to ambitious engineering projects! You can learn so much just listening to it! Give it a shot! Also - @its_bvisness joined us, and deepened the discussion with the best inquiries you could’ve imagined! Thank you folks! youtu.be/961jsHqhkCI?is=Neiw

It is going to be an inspiring week for programmers in Vancouver. I'll live code with Grain DDL in front of an audience at Handmade Network Expo hosted by @handmade_net at 10 sharp, with video published for everyone later. Live coding on a language you implemented is a type of performance art only a programmer can pull off. Going first means I get to hang back and watch demos from @antovsky, @nicbarker, @gdechichi, Leddoo, @starfreakclone and @struc_ture afterwards. Let's go.
Announcing Grain DDL: code generation by and for demanding engine developers. Define your structs and data once. Write custom generators for protocols, save files, language interop, shaders, databases, more. No macros, no metaprogramming. Generate reviewable code on every keystroke. 300kB compiler exe. Windows, Mac, Linux. Closed beta applications are now open - link in replies.

If you have a file browser and a way to kill processes, what more do you really need đŸ€”
Just found out an active File Pilot community member @thomasklemenc made a task manager inspired by it! Handmade from scratch, C++, win32, D3D custom renderer, 1.55 MB. More of this in my feed, less AI slopware.

Time to get real technical yalls. Come see what it's like to implement a 6DOF tracking library with less memory than an image from your phone.
This Thursday there will be a one of a kind event! @antovsky will walk @its_bvisness and me through the design & implementation process of PS Move - a tracking solution for Playstation. We're gonna walk through the hardcore hardware reality of the solution, grounded in the historical context (market rivals, PS game development) @antovsky has even prepared a software simulator, to accurately showcase the difficulty - simulator can change lighting conditions, bluriness of the image, etc. It's gonna be a long one, +3h of stream, with lots of stories and angles and plot twists! Make sure you're ready on Thursday!

Come check out what we've been cookin' :)
On June 6 we are hosting the first-ever Handmade Network Expo in Vancouver, BC, an in-person event celebrating software made from scratch. Among the lineup: a new game from @antovsky & @nicbarkeragain, a time travel debugger for macOS by @leddoo_dev, a custom metaprogramming language and IDE from @frogtoss, a custom game engine by @gdechichi, and more. More info and tickets below :)

Gonna stream some Naut development today at 5PM PST (link below). On the agenda: [!] 56-3(4) bug [ ] Don't run when out of focus [ ] Investigate "dead input" [ ] hex is capped to 4 bytes? [ ] Make a "help" menu? [ ] Revisit hex syntax? + Whatever else comes up on stream?
