Marianne Vos claimed her second UCI Gravel World Championship title on 10 October 2026 in Nannup, Western Australia, winning the elite women’s race solo after a decisive late attack that forced her closest rival to crash.
The Visma | Lease a Bike rider finished the 125.6 km course in 4:30:04, securing her 15th elite rainbow jersey across cyclo-cross, road, track, and gravel. It was the first Gravel Worlds held outside Europe.
Race Overview and Course:
The event took place on a demanding, technical course of 125.6 km with roughly 3,179 metres of elevation gain. Approximately 84% was gravel (including forest roads, eucalyptus tracks, and private land). It featured a succession of short climbs (typically 1–4 km at 4–9% gradients), with the toughest efforts around Ellis Creek and the Folly Climb.
Morning rain left sections muddy and slippery, increasing the technical demands and risk of crashes. The race started at 10:10 local time after a short paved approach around Nannup before entering the rolling gravel terrain and a final local loop.
Conditions favoured strong, experienced all-rounders who could handle both the climbing and the technical descents/mud.
The Netherlands entered with depth (Vos, Larissa Hartog, Elisa Serné, Geerike Schreurs and others). Germany’s Rosa Klöser (a strong gravel specialist and former Unbound winner) arrived as a major contender.
How the Race Unfolded and How Marianne Won:
The Netherlands controlled early. Local favourite Tiffany Cromwell (in her final professional race) launched a significant attack roughly 75 km from the finish and built a lead of over a minute.
A serious crash eliminated or severely hampered Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio and Geerike Schreurs (the latter left on the ground in considerable pain).
On the harder climbs the field fragmented. Vos, Klöser, Nele Laing, Hartog and Erica Magnaldi emerged as the strongest. Klöser had earlier mechanical issues (including a puncture that cost her more than a minute) but recovered impressively to rejoin the front.
Cromwell was caught and later surged past a leading group. With around 21–25 km remaining, Vos and Klöser attacked clear of the larger group and built a comfortable gap of about a minute.
Klöser was stronger on the climbs and put Vos under sustained pressure; the Dutchwoman “had to dig deep” to follow.
They entered the final 10 km together. Vos, aware of the technical final corners and descent, tightened her shoes and attacked roughly 3.5–4 km from the finish on a tricky section.
Klöser tried to follow but hit a rut/slippery corner, lost traction and crashed. She remounted and chased but could not close the gap. Vos soloed to the line. Hartog outsprinted Laing for third, completing a strong Dutch result.
Final results (elite women, 125.6 km):
Marianne Vos (NED) — 4:30:04
Rosa Klöser (GER) — +0:27
Larissa Hartog (NED) — +2:15
Nele Laing (GER) — s.t.
Erica Magnaldi (ITA) — +4:17
Sofia Gómez Villafañe (ARG) — +5:15
Irina Lützelschwab (SUI) — +5:28
Tiffany Cromwell (AUS) — +7:15
Elisa Serné (NED) — s.t.
Haley Smith (CAN) — +8:55
Competitors’ Performances:
Rosa Klöser (2nd): The strongest pure climber of the day and the only rider able to stay with Vos for long. The crash on a technical section denied her a chance at the title. She still took a clear silver.
Larissa Hartog (3rd): Consistent presence in the front groups and decisive in the sprint for bronze against Laing. Strong supporting role for the Dutch effort.
Nele Laing (4th): Matched Hartog’s time after being part of the chase.
Erica Magnaldi (5th): Solid top-five for Italy after featuring in the select groups.
Sofia Gómez Villafañe (6th): Recovered from a front-tyre puncture to finish strongly.
Tiffany Cromwell (8th): Aggressive early attack and late surge; a fitting end to her professional career on home soil.
Geerike Schreurs and Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio: Involved in a significant crash that effectively ended their races.
Others (including Wendy Oosterwoud, the 2026 Gravel World Series overall winner, and various specialists) were present but did not feature in the final podium fight at the level of the leaders.
Vos controlled positioning from the front, chose her lines on technical sections, and timed her attack perfectly. Experience on slippery, technical terrain proved decisive.
Vos’s Reaction:
Vos was emotional afterwards.
Asked what the title meant, she replied “A lot… a whole lot.” She noted the course was muddier and more slippery than expected, praised Klöser’s strength on the climbs, and said she wanted to be in front for the final technical corner and descent.

She fell into the arms of her coach Jan Boven, partner Moniek, and brother Anton. The win closed a difficult 2026 that included the death of her father Henk in the spring and a collarbone fracture earlier in the season; she had only one prior road victory that year and skipped the road Worlds to prepare specifically for this race.
Career Context:
15 Rainbow Jerseys and Overall Wins
This is Vos’s second gravel world title (after 2024 in Leuven, where she beat Lotte Kopecky in a sprint) and her 15th elite rainbow jersey overall:
Cyclo-cross: 8 (2006, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2022) — the all-time record.
Road race: 3 (2006, 2012, 2013).
Track: 2 (points race 2008, scratch 2011).
Gravel: 2 (2024, 2026).
She is also a double Olympic gold medallist (track points race Beijing 2008; road race London 2012) and has multiple European and national titles.
ProCyclingStats records approximately 259 professional wins for her (primarily road, with additional successes in other disciplines).
In her peak years she regularly won 18–31 races per season. She has three Giro d’Italia Femminile overall titles, dozens of stage wins, multiple Flèche Wallonne, Ronde van Vlaanderen, Amstel Gold Race, and many other classics and stage-race victories.
Comparison with Other Female Professionals:
Vos stands out for volume, longevity, and multi-discipline excellence.
No other modern rider matches her combination of road dominance, cyclo-cross titles, track success, and now repeated gravel titles.
Jeannie Longo holds the women’s road race Worlds record with five titles (1985–87, 1989, 1995) and was extraordinarily dominant in her era, with a very high overall win count (historically cited well over 100–160 depending on counting criteria).
Pauline Ferrand-Prévot has accumulated roughly 15 world titles, the large majority in mountain biking (multiple XCO, marathon, short track, and mixed relay titles), plus one each in road (2014), cyclo-cross (2015), and gravel (inaugural 2022). She is uniquely versatile across road/MTB/CX/gravel and won Olympic MTB gold in 2024, but her title count is heavily concentrated in MTB sub-disciplines.
Annemiek van Vleuten won two road race Worlds (2019, 2022), multiple time-trial titles, and numerous stage races/classics; she ranks among the greatest pure climbers/GC riders of the modern era with 100+ wins.
Other high-win riders include Ina-Yoko Teutenberg (148), Judith Arndt, Kirsten Wild, current star Lorena Wiebes (who reached her 140th career win today).
Vos remains the clear leader in total professional victories among women in the UCI era and is frequently described as the most complete and successful female cyclist of her generation.
Still winning rainbows on a technical off-road course after two decades at the top, her longevity is exceptional.

Marianne Vos won the second edition of the 2026 Critérium de Bretagne, a post-Tour de France exhibition critérium organized by the Club Cyclo Sportif Javenéen in the streets of Javené (near Fougères, Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany). It took place on Saturday 22 August 2026 under good weather and drew thousands of spectators for a festive, accessible “fête du vélo” that mixed professionals with local riders and emphasized proximity between stars and the public.
The event revived a traditional format that had largely disappeared from the region: short urban-circuit racing shortly after the Tour. The same 2.7 km loop through the heart of the village used in 2025 was the venue. The day also featured youth (U15) racing, rider presentations, and a charity partnership with the association Souffles d’Espoir to raise funds against cancer. Audrey Cordon-Ragot served as godmother of the edition. Organizers intend to make the race a fixture.
Women’s race:
29 riders started at 17:00. Headliner was Dutch legend Marianne Vos (Visma–Lease a Bike), a double Olympic champion and multi-time world champion on road, track and cyclo-cross with a huge palmarès. Other prominent names included Breton riders Cédrine Kerbaol and Maëva Squiban (runner-up in 2025) plus Italian sprinter Martina Alzini.
Marianne won the race, beating Kerbaol into second and Alzini into third. The result continued the pattern of high-profile winners: Pauline Ferrand-Prévot had taken the inaugural 2025 edition.
Women’s podium and special prizes (official classifications)
1st: Marianne Vos
2nd: Cédrine Kerbaol
3rd: Martina Alzini
Best animator: Charlotte Kool
Most combative: Mackenzie Coupland
Best young rider: Marion Bunel
Best Bretonne: Marie Le Net
Best amateur: Ambre Jouault
Vos succeeded Ferrand-Prévot on the honours list; Kerbaol’s second place was a strong home result for the Breton rider who had been runner-up at the 2026 French national championships. Alzini, a Cofidis rider and world team-pursuit champion on the track, added a podium in the bunch-sprint style finish typical of these critériums.
