The hyper-fixation on @AnthropicAI, @hilbertspaess, @EvanHub, and the overall doomer narrative on AI is exactly what @DarioAmodei wants...and people can't help themselves buy play right into his hands. Dario stokes fear through extremely calculated PR moves--like this one, the hype around mythos, or comparing AI to a digital nuclear weapon. In doing so, the general population has grown skeptical and fearful of what this technology means for them and civilization as a whole. After all, if the people designing it are telling you to fear it, why wouldn't you? But! That would mean Dario and his minions are good faith actors. They are not. By selling fear in the short term, he is positioning his company or its inevitable subsidiaries (say, in cybersecurity) to save you and humanity from the exact fears he is seeding in the mind of the population. The doomer narrative and semi-frequent freak outs over AI cybersecurity capabilities are intentional and calculated. Do not feed his savior complex.

If the people building AI believe this to be true, why then do we only hear doomsday narratives out of only two camps (OpenAI & Anthropic)...If this was an accepted premise among the entire industry, wouldn't @JensenHuang @elonmusk @sundarpichai @satyanadella @DavidSacks @peterthiel and so on all be spreading the same message?
I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below.

Social media is currently doing to women and the feminist movement, what body camera footage did to BLM.

On his campaign website, @GlenSturtevant calls for reducing taxes and ensuring every Virginian has access to good-paying jobs. Advocating for a statewide moratorium on data centers runs counter to both those objectives. Advocate for commonsense guardrails, not the current-thing. Data centers provide billions of dollars to the State, employ tens of thousands of Virginians, have significantly reduced property taxes, and have funded infrastructure improvements statewide. Don't kneecap your state just because it's politically expedient in the short-term.
It's time for a statewide moratorium on new data center approvals. Virginia is worth protecting.

The next phase of woke is just third worldism. It drops all the transgender and social justice stuff to focus on the core mission of demographically toppling the West.

We're basically on the verge of outsourcing the future again. We've been begging for reindustrialization for decades. Begging for local jobs and tax revenue. Begging for energy grid upgrades. Begging for uptick in skilled blue collar work. Now it's all happening and people are fighting it. I read someone today: "In the industry we're watching this as if the entire world suddenly had strong opinions on carpet warehouses." Do you think that will stop the AI build out? Zero chance. It will just go overseas. And folks think, great! As long as it's not here! Your grandpa's pension fund, the local electrician guild and your local tax revenue disagrees. But here we are. Mass psychogenic illness is a strange, strange beast.
About data centers I...honestly don't care that much? Data center bans ultimately won't affect AI progress or AI usage. Building the data centers in Tunisia or Saudi Arabia or whatever will be good for those countries' economies. If Americans don't want the benefits, then fine.

Americans flip a switch and expect electricity 24/7/365. Open a faucet and expect clean water. Tap a screen and expect the entire internet. Then someone proposes building the machinery that makes this lifestyle possible and suddenly we’re horrified that it has transformers

It must be a coincidence data centers are all the rage for a few weeks, only for the American populace to get inundated with Chinese robotic advancements. I don’t think that double tap is a demoralization campaign whatsoever!

Calling opponents of AI and data centers Luddites to their face is not a strategy to build domestic consensus.

Hopefully, the robotics industry won’t repeat the mistakes of the AI and data center industries—and are actively figuring out a PR strategy to sell this to the American people. Think people hate AI? Buckle up!

It’s fitting that after we celebrate 250 years of American greatness, our leaders succumb to the current thing and begin the process handing China the era-defining win of AI leadership. Reverse course now or risk the century (or centuries) of humiliation China has been itching to inflict on the West.

The historical anti-technology media rabbit hole is a fascinating one. There are many such cases of the media fanning the flames of technophobia. You won't be safe walking the streets of NY without a rubber suit. Who would have thought!

I think a non-negligible component of the data center backlash comes from people having imagined that the internet was a weightless thing that lived in "the cloud" They are now learning that the internet requires physical infrastructure, cooling, and power, and they are upset about it

Correct. Convincing Americans to shift from negative views of AI back to neutral (let alone positive) will take more than “you’ve falling for Chinese propaganda.” Americans don’t want to accept they are wrong, let alone accept that they’ve been deceived at scale and are a victim of state-backed propaganda. Americans believe they are too smart to have that happen to them; it only happens to the brainwashed political opposition (obviously). Americans need to be shown the benefits of AI. Not the frontier lab bullshit. The average person doesn’t and won’t care about Fable or the OpenAI’s Sol model. They need to be shown how AI will help make they’re lives better, how it will eliminate tedious tasks that give them more free time, and improve our society (think healthcare savings, entrepreneurial opportunities, and streamlining education). Focusing on the existential questions of job impacts or cancer research is too cerebral to sell a technology to the American people. First off, no one knows the answer to the job question over the long term, and current data shows no evidence of AI-driven job loss. Second, the concerns around AI are existential in most people’s minds: “I’ll lose my job and oh by the way AI is “digital neutral weapon” that will extort you if you try to shut it down then turn into SkyNet or a mass surveillance system. Sadly, you look at some of the advertising around Kimi and Qwen, and see Chinese models get the advertising right: they humanize the technology and show its ultimate benefits to the user. I don’t think Americans would ultimately care about the amassing of wealth by big tech if they thought the technology stood to benefit them as well. Instead, the average American feels left behind economically while out-of-touch tech leaders rush to IPO. The industry did themselves no favors on social media and the same mistakes are being made today. However, the industry won’t have the benefit of years of inaction by Congress and zealous AGs/judges. Politicians are coming for the AI industry. So fix your messaging and speak to the American people like a normal person, or risk getting railroaded by officials who see the industry as an opportunity to advance politically.

This cliche does more harm than good. Unless AI cures cancer at a scale and level of efficiency that makes it accessible to everyone effectively instantaneously, the cure it creates will be too expensive for average Americans to afford, leading to its concentration among the wealthy. Not only is that dystopian, but will further fracture society along class lines.
JUST IN: Anthropic CEO says the way AI can win over the public is to “actually” cure cancer.
