I totally forgot, since I have my own blog, I have the pleasure of adding this scroll to top button 😂 now I'm a professional blog writer
can we start normalizing the use of SVGs over images to render logos on websites pls, I feel like maintaining high quality for logos is sometimes overlooked
"Technology can make it easier to build or faster to build, but sometimes it also makes it harder to care for the craft." - Karri Saarinen, Crafting Quality That Endures
I've been learning more about design engineering recently, and part of that was redefining what the essence of taste meant to me.
it just so happens that a big part of taste involves craft.
but what exactly is craft? I like to think of craft as simply showing that you care in your work.
for instance, you can gauge picasso's craft through his works of fine art; you can tell that he truly cared about the art that he made.
I find what @karrisaarinen says to be profoundly true because, in the age of AI, a lot of people can be so concerned with shipping fast that they often lose sight of their craft.
I genuinely do believe that behind every good product, exists good craft; and good craft tends to lead to high quality outputs.
if you're able to show that you care through your craft in your product, people will notice, and users will come.
thus, I believe that craft is indispensable.

this has become one of my favorite quotes recently:
"If taste is just personal preference, then everyone’s taste is already perfect.” - Paul Graham
@paulg makes a very solid point here, the essence of taste is in fact beyond mere personal preference alone
a good way I like to think about taste is that it's a combination of personal preference + what's societally considered of good quality (great aesthetic and great UX)
when someone asks me for examples of good taste, I usually like to point them towards @linear
the people at linear deeply care about their product, beyond mere product functionality. every interaction, every animation, every visual component; all of these are carefully thought through and executed in a tasteful manner
if you're able to discern good UI/UX in conjunction with societal/cultural standards, I'd say you have good taste
struggle with reflection leads to internalization, and internalization with opportunity leads to success

felt pretty inspired by @arlanoska so I decided to create my own dedicated page for some of the cool things I make
I was experimenting with figma motion earlier, so here's some stacking lego bricks

just published a new blog entailing my personal thoughts on what design engineering is!

i've officially joined the cool kids club
website animations are something that have existed for a long, long time
they're also one of the core components of design engineering
and when they're applied properly, they provide that level of visual gratification that you never knew you craved
so I'm looking forward to following along the course by @emilkowalski!
if you wanna level up your theoretical and practical knowledge of animations, go ahead and check out: animations.dev/
