SEQUOIA PARTNER PAT GRADY THINKS AGI MAY ALREADY BE HERE TIL: Sequoia’s Pat Grady thinks AI crossed a much bigger threshold in the second half of 2025. ChatGPT showed the power of pretraining in 2022. Reasoning models pushed complex problem-solving forward in 2024. Then came long-horizon agents like Claude Code and Opus 4.5. That third shift matters because AI is no longer just answering questions or helping humans make better software. It can increasingly take a goal, work on it for an extended period, and finish the job. Grady’s comparison is basically this: we spent years building faster horses, and then suddenly got the car. And if he is right that this is already a form of AGI, the next question gets much bigger than chatbots or coding agents... NVIDIA SOLD THE GPUs. THE PROBLEM IS MANY OF THEM MAY NOT EVEN BE TURNED ON YET TIL: The next AI infrastructure bottleneck may not be GPUs. It may be electricity, construction, and debt. Oracle has warned that it could invoke force majeure on its Jupiter data center project in New Mexico if enough power is not available by 2028. And this may be much bigger than one project. One estimate cited in the material suggests only about 35% of announced data centers are actually under construction, while the share that ultimately gets completed could be below 10%. That creates a strange possibility: Nvidia can keep reporting huge GPU sales even while a meaningful amount of that hardware is still sitting in warehouses or unfinished facilities waiting for power. The estimate for inactive Nvidia GPUs is enormous: roughly $200B to $300B. And if that estimate is even directionally right, the most important AI demand number may not be how many GPUs were sold... ZUCKERBERG THINKS THE NEXT COMPUTER WON’T BE A PHONE. IT’LL BE AI YOU WEAR TIL: Meta’s product strategy is starting to converge around two things: personal AI agents and glasses. Zuckerberg thinks the next major AI advantage may not come from squeezing out a little more math performance. It may come from whether the AI actually understands what you want, protects your information, and can be trusted to act on your behalf. That is the idea behind Muse. Instead of just answering questions, Muse is being built to shop, manage schedules, respond to emails, track information, and continue working inside its own virtual computer after you walk away. Then put that kind of agent inside glasses. The AI could see what you see, hear what you hear, understand your surroundings, and give you information without making you constantly pull out a phone. And that helps explain why Meta’s internal priority has shifted from the metaverse toward AI much faster than Zuckerberg originally expected... PETER THIEL ON AI: THE WEST MAY FINALLY BE ESCAPING DECADES OF STAGNATION TIL: Peter Thiel has argued for nearly two decades that technological progress slowed sharply after the 1970s. His distinction was always between the “world of bits,” where computers, software and the internet kept advancing, and the “world of atoms,” where progress in areas like energy, aerospace and heavy industry slowed. AI is making him rethink part of that thesis. He now sees a possibility that AI could become a technological shift even larger than the internet and push economic growth meaningfully higher again. That does not mean he dismisses AI risk. Even a 5% or 10% chance of losing control over increasingly capable systems would matter. But Thiel sees another risk on the other side too: what happens if societies become so afraid of technological risk that they stop progressing altogether... THE U.S. SHIPBUILDING PROBLEM MAY NEED A KOREAN SOLUTION TIL: Hanwha is putting about $5 billion into its Philadelphia shipyard, with plans to transform a yard producing roughly one vessel a year into one capable of building as many as 20 annually. Hanwha But the more interesting part isn’t the docks. Hanwha is trying to bring over the operating system behind Korean shipbuilding: robotic welding, digital twins, automated inspection, production software and the smart-yard techniques already used at its Geoje shipyard. Hanwha Geoje builds roughly 45 commercial and naval ships a year. The plan is not just to copy the equipment, but also to rebuild the workforce behind it. Hanwha That includes training American shipbuilders, transferring Korean production know-how, and eventually using Philadelphia for commercial ships, naval modules and potentially naval vessels. Hanwha Which makes Hanwha’s real export to America something much bigger than ships... ANTHROPIC WANTS A $2 TRILLION VALUATION. NVIDIA TRADES BELOW 17X FORWARD EARNINGS. TIL: Anthropic is reportedly targeting an IPO valuation around $2 trillion, while its August annualized revenue was estimated at roughly $65 billion. That works out to about 31x revenue. Meanwhile, Nvidia, the company selling much of the compute behind the AI boom, was trading at less than 17x expected earnings over the next year. The contrast gets stranger when you look underneath the AI buildout. Model prices are falling rapidly, data-center financing costs are rising, and some of the biggest projects still require enormous amounts of capital before they generate meaningful cash flow. One data-center developer discussed in the material had no operating data centers yet, but roughly $174 billion of committed buildout still needing financing. And across the industry, the same companies increasingly appear as investors, customers, landlords, equipment suppliers and guarantors to one another. Which raises a much harder question than whether AI demand is real: If model prices keep collapsing while chips, power and financing stay expensive, who in this chain actually keeps the margins... MASKED MEN ATTACK KOREAN RESTAURANT NAMED “XI JINPING” TIL: Two masked men broke into a Chinese restaurant in Korea(Bundang) around 2:40 a.m., smashed property, sprayed black paint and left pesticide containers behind. The owner suspects the restaurant’s name may have made it a target, saying complaints had been coming in for months and there had already been an earlier attack... INTERVIEW: ELON MUSK THINKS CHINA’S REAL AI ADVANTAGE MAY BE POWER AND EFFICIENCY TIL: China may still be constrained by access to the most advanced chips, but Musk sees two advantages that could matter just as much over time. The first is efficiency. Chinese AI companies are already producing strong models with relatively limited compute, which means their performance per unit of compute may be among the best in the world. The second is electricity. China already generates more power than the U.S., Europe, and India combined, giving it a potentially enormous advantage as AI becomes increasingly limited by energy rather than just chips. And Musk doesn’t think today’s semiconductor constraints will necessarily last. He suggested China could make meaningful progress in lithography and domestic chip production within the next few years. But the part that gets even more interesting is where he thinks the next AI battleground moves after software... TRUMP WANTED STABILITY. XI WANTED TIME. BOTH GOT A LITTLE OF EACH (CSIS) TIL: Xi Jinping’s White House visit looked much warmer than the underlying U.S.-China relationship actually is. Trump gave Xi unusually high-level treatment, and both sides clearly wanted to keep the relationship from sliding back into open confrontation. But the economic truce was extended only until Jan. 10, while tariffs, advanced-tech restrictions, Taiwan, AI, Iran and the South China Sea all remain unresolved. One reason the truce matters is that China’s rare-earth leverage has become much harder for Washington to ignore. Beijing responded to U.S. tariffs and export controls by tightening rare-earth exports, giving China a powerful way to raise the cost of further U.S. pressure without matching Washington tariff for tariff. China’s goal also appears relatively limited: avoid new tariffs, stop technology controls from tightening further, and preserve as much access to the U.S. market as possible. Washington, meanwhile, still wants more Chinese purchases, more reliable rare-earth supplies and room to keep pressure on strategic technologies. So this looks less like a real détente than a carefully managed pause. Trump wanted stability. Xi wanted time. And the fact that the truce was extended for only a short period may tell us how much of the real bargaining is still unfinished... CHINA’S ECONOMIC COERCION IS CHANGING HOW SOUTH KOREA THINKS ABOUT SECURITY (CSIS) TIL: Economic coercion is different from an ordinary trade dispute. The leverage comes from using trade, tourism, investment, or market access to pressure another country over sovereign political and security decisions. South Korea already experienced this after the 2016 THAAD decision, when Chinese pressure hit Korean tourism, retail, cosmetics and other China-exposed industries. Estimates of the economic damage ran into billions of dollars. That experience matters again because the U.S.-South Korea alliance itself is changing. Seoul now talks about strengthening its own capabilities while expanding the alliance beyond traditional defense into shipbuilding, semiconductors, AI and nuclear cooperation. Which leaves South Korea with a much harder problem: How do you keep trading with China without letting access to the Chinese market influence your national-security choices, while taking on a larger role inside a changing U.S. alliance... NORTH KOREA ISN’T CHOOSING BETWEEN CHINA AND RUSSIA. IT MAY BE USING BOTH (CSIS) TIL: China and North Korea are rapidly rebuilding high-level ties. Xi Jinping visited North Korea in June, followed by additional senior-level exchanges between Beijing and Pyongyang, marking a sharp improvement from the much cooler relationship seen in 2024. At first glance, this looks like China pulling North Korea back as Russia’s influence grows. But Pyongyang may be doing something more useful for itself: keeping both relationships alive. Russia increasingly provides security and military cooperation. China remains North Korea’s main economic and diplomatic lifeline. 38 North describes the two relationships as potentially complementary rather than mutually exclusive. (38 North) Which raises a more interesting question. If neither China nor Russia wants the other to become too dominant in Pyongyang, who actually has the leverage here...
