On Wednesday, 17 December 2025, the conference officially opened with a shared sense of purpose: strengthening disability inclusion within higher education institutions. The opening session featured welcoming remarks from Prof. Kayihura Muganga Didas, Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Rwanda (@Uni_Rwanda), alongside Ms. Noelia López, Senior Project Manager at the University of Alicante (@UA_Universida ), the lead partner of the ANSWER Project. Their messages set the tone for reflection, collaboration, and meaningful impact. This was followed by a keynote address from @emmandayisaba, Executive Secretary of the National Council of Persons with Disabilities (@ncpdrwanda), who emphasized the importance of strong institutional commitment and coordinated action in promoting inclusive education. Participants then engaged in a comprehensive presentation on the main results and impact of the ANSWER Project, led by the University of Alicante, highlighting achievements made across partner institutions. The discussion continued with the presentation of a Proposed National Strategy for the Effective Implementation and Monitoring of Disability Inclusion in Higher Education, delivered by representatives from the @Rwanda_Edu #MINEDUC. The next panel featured rich experience-sharing through a high-level roundtable, where professors from the University of Rwanda (@Uni_Rwanda), INES-Ruhengeri, and the East African University of Rwanda (@eaur_rw) shared real classroom experiences of teaching and supporting students with disabilities. The session was moderated by Lefkothea Kartasidou, Professor of Special Education at the @univofmacedonia. The day concluded on a cultural note with a vibrant performance by the Inyamibwa Traditional Dancers, followed by moments of networking and fellowship among participants. On Thursday, 18 December 2025, the conference entered its second day with a strong focus on monitoring, implementation, and inclusion beyond the classroom. The day opened with the presentation of findings from monitoring visits conducted by the National Council of Persons with Disabilities (@ncpdrwanda), offering valuable insights from evaluations across participating universities. This was followed by a presentation from UWEZO Youth Empowerment, highlighting outcomes of disability-inclusive programmes and internship opportunities, and emphasizing the critical transition from education to employment. Discussions deepened during another experience-sharing roundtable, this time focusing on the experiences of university staff supporting students with disabilities. Moderated by Ms. Esther Gallego, Director of the Employment Promotion and Social Inclusion Service at the University of Alicante, the session brought together voices from the University of Rwanda, @uwezorwanda, and university student support services, underscoring the importance of institutional systems and human-centered support. The conference concluded with closing remarks from Prof. Florien Nsanganwimana, Principal of the University of Rwanda College of Education, who reaffirmed the collective responsibility of higher education institutions to build inclusive, accessible, and equitable learning environments.
