Not a family doc - but listening to debate around 3rd year of training with interest. My reality as a specialist: 20% of my patients have no FP & aspects of their care are falling thru the cracks; I can't deliver the care an FP does; and most of my FP friends are burned out. 1/2
I am not a family doc, but so many of the arguments re: extending length of training are very weak. I worry that MD training is precisely WHY we have the crisis we do. Let me break it down by the arguments provided 🧵 : 1/

One of the most important aspects of academic orthopaedics is generating interest in our specialty. Great to see so many keen and interested medical students at our COSMEC skills day today. Hopefully we’ve opened some eyes!

84% of health care professionals buy a coffee everyday.
Surgeons (ortho and general) drink more than most.
But coffee isn't all good.

Dr. @anserdaud and I published a piece today in the @globeandmail on the need to invest and innovate in the home care space.
To better support our aging population, it's vital that we do more to keep patients at home and out of hospitals/LTCs.

We’re deeply concerned by CPC MPs @LeslynLewis @DeanAllisonMP @ColinCarrieCPC meeting with @AndersonAfDMdEP - a member of the far-right German AFD Party known for Islamophobic and anti-immigrant views. We raised this directly with @CPC_HQ.

During her 36 years as Mayor, Hazel shaped Mississauga into a city that is the envy of the world. As a trailblazing woman in politics and a no-nonsense city builder she was an inspiration to many, including myself. We will carry her legacy. She is forever a part of our history.

Excellence in Canadian healthcare is resident physicians (still completing their specialization) handling with poise a heavy volume of consultation requests at academic centres with some of the nation's most complex medical and surgical patients. Thank you. @ResidentDoctors

My latest, on the endless, immovable, and above all unnecessary crisis in health care. It’s not that we don’t know what to do — health policy wonks are broadly agreed on the sorts of reforms needed. We just don’t know how to get it done.

Our hearts are with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at community during this difficult time, as they mourn the passing of former President Naseem Mahdi. He dedicated his life to bettering the lives of others – and he leaves behind an incredible legacy.
A legend, visionary, icon of @AhmadiyyaCanada who illuminated our hearts & our mosques beyond measure.
For countless youngsters like myself, it was his transformative persona that showed us what it meant to be an Ahmadi Muslim & to love one's country 🇨🇦.

Saddened to learn of the death of my good friend Naseem Mahdi, senior Imam of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat in Canada. A man of great wisdom and kindness.
My condolences to all members of the Ahmadiyya community.
In 2021, there was a 10% increase in Adderall prescriptions, while growing evidence suggests social media use is a risk factor for poor mental health.
@PCMZhang & I explain why @elonmusk & other tech giants must pay heed.
Our latest in @TorontoStar: thestar.com/opinion/contribu…
A series of recent controversial opinion tweets by @elonmusk have triggered a transient interest in this topic of mental health/pharmacotherapy—but whether the role of social media will be addressed & practical solutions will be implemented remains to be seen.
