Researchers have found most students from Northern Ireland are choosing to stay and live here. The rates of locals loving home is especially stark when it's compared to every other part of the UK. For example, in south west England, most younger people chose to leave to study.
This is a really good write-up of our report out today which covers lots of the different aspects and nuance we look at. Well worth a read if you don't have time for the 120 pages!

💥⁉️NEW: Does Northern Ireland really have a “brain drain”? - Students here no more likely to leave home to study than elsewhere in UK
🎥🎤 Chief Reporter @jamesgould23 with this report.
🛩 Independent research has provided fresh insight into student and graduate mobility in Northern Ireland, challenging long-held assumptions about young people leaving.
⛔️ It suggests local students are no more likely to leave their home region to study than their counterparts elsewhere in the UK.
Lower student fees in Northern Ireland, compared with England and Wales, may be one factor helping to keep students here.
Around 78% of students from Northern Ireland stay here to study, while the 22% who leave is broadly in line with other parts of the UK.
But the bigger issue? Not enough students are coming into Northern Ireland.
Researchers say the focus now needs to shift away from trying to stop people leaving and towards creating a genuine “brain gain”.
Speaking to Economy Minister @CArchibald_SF and researcher Dr Anne Devlin.

New publication out today which looks at student mobility into and out of NI. Putting some meat on the bones of the often discussed 'brain drain'

We also note the rapidly falling population of young people in NI as well as a lack of graduate employment opportunities which are important parts of this debate that are often not discussed.

JUST PUBLISHED – Why is economic inactivity so persistent in Northern Ireland? by @anne_dev1 & Thomas Hastings

Thomas Hastings (@QUBBusiness) and I have published a piece on @EconObservatory today which looks at the reasons behind economic inactivity and the barriers to work people face. From qualitative evidence we find that the barriers faced are nuanced and complex.
And often compounding barriers are evident. This makes policy in this space tricky.
