five episodes into ELLE and really struggling to understand the super negative critic response here,, it’s a very fun, if slightly shallow, teen drama that wears the IP as a loose skin—no worse a crime than the execution of something like Wednesday

if anything, the side characters need fleshing out, but that’s more a streaming problem than an all-out failure on the show’s part, and the guaranteed second season gives them a chance to actually solve it

i also really Really don’t care if or how it matches up with the canon of Legally Blonde, it makes me think of something like a Carrie Diaries rather than a Rise of the Pink Ladies, where this show keeps the spirit of the original while not being completely married to its canon

this “strategy” from streamers of moving out of the YA space despite their desperation to capture the next generation of subscribers is completely nonsensical, where YA audiences are stuck watching teen dramas of the 2000s before streaming ruined TV
Chandler Kinney seemingly confirmed in an interview with Zach Sang that #PLLSummerSchool was canceled because Max wanted out of the YA genre, despite the second season performing better than #PLLOriginalSin.

Writers at that outlet are getting like $30 a piece, not to mention entertainment writers are fighting for their lives. Why are you shaming them for small critiques of your show on main? If no one wrote about your show it would 100% be cancelled...

Attacking a journalist for writing an article that is essentially saying “I wish we had longer seasons of this show I love” is weird as hell. If you’re supporting that sort of vitriol from your fave, I fear you need to touch some grass immediately.

every streamer should take School Spirits’ success as the blueprint for how to break into teen TV and how to cultivate a teen audience (which, surprise surprise, is the low-budget, small-scale, character-driven writing/production that was Always the blueprint for YA TV)

while i absolutely understand that this reason is Why women are so drawn to MLM romance, i don’t necessarily think “removing women = safety” is a Good thing to be celebrating about your show
#HeatedRivalry creator Jacob Tierney on why women love the show: "Women love these books. These are books written by a woman. These are books largely consumed by women. So I wouldn’t want to speak on behalf of a female audience, but I think that what women are presented in romance is not always something that interests them in that way. I think that women are also, in real life and in culture, endlessly exposed to sexual violence. Seeing things like this, that are depictions ultimately of male vulnerability, can be very refreshing. From what I’ve heard, from the women who have written to me and Rachel and the boys, there’s a safety in seeing a woman being removed from the conversation. So you’re watching something happen between two men, and there is no fear of violence. There is no fear of things turning into stuff that women have to deal with too much in real life, and don’t want to deal with in their fantasies, and ultimately, this is a romantic fantasy. I think it’s also that maybe romance — which is a genre that women love and write and read and are the primary consumers of — just doesn’t get treated with a lot of respect. Nor do the people that make it, or those that adapt it either. So I think that they are responding to, at least I hope, the fact that we came to it pretty fullhearted, and as fans and as people who want to honor this material and want to honor the genre and make it as romantic as we can. That’s certainly what I wanted to do." variety.com/2025/tv/news/hea…
