This might be the first hot take on how technology tells us how to live our lives, destroying our ability to make human decisions. The technology in question is the sundial. From a 3rd century BCE Roman adaptation of a Greek play, as discussed in Kerr’s “The Ordered Day”

Kevin Bunch of the Retronauts video game podcast interviewed me on the history of BASIC programming, DTSS, and BASIC FTBALL, a game written in 1965. I was so happy to be part of this podcast with Joy Lisi Rankin. retronauts.com/article/2476/…

Yesterday, AG Pam Bondi sent a remarkable & telling letter to MN Governor Tim Walz in response to his plea that the administration stand down its ICE mobilization after the violent killing of Alex Pretti. Bondi’s letter underscores clear abuses of power. nytimes.com/interactive/2026…

I think there’s been a misunderstanding, when I said I wanted feedback on my writing, I meant I wanted you to tell me how great it is

This month is the 20th anniversary of the launch of Writely, which was later acquired by Google and became Google Docs. Next Tuesday, August 26, I'll be chatting with Sam Schillace, Steve Newman, and Claudia Carpenter, the founders of Writely, to reflect on what it took to make the leap they made and what that might teach us about the leaps that remain ahead for AI. Join me for a conversation with them! oreilly.com/radar/we-are-onl…

We should expect AI research to be messy--my takeaway from this incident. (I wrote a Substack post, link in the comments.)
I wrote a really comprehensive post on the fraudulent MIT paper on AI adoption for materials research. If the story interests you, I think you'll really like this piece:

Update on this paper from last year on AI in scientific discovery. MIT put out a press release: "no confidence in the provenance, reliability or validity of the data...[or] veracity of the research." "The author is no longer at MIT."
A new paper about AI in Materials Discovery has gained a lot of attention - it reports a big increase in productivity of scientists using AI tools, and interesting secondary effects of using AI for science. But do the technical claims stack up? Let's see...

This is an amazing analysis of a widely circulated paper on AI and materials research, which caused a splash in Nov and turns out to be a total fraud.

this looks amazing! what a great application of VR.
Sharing a small personal project I’ve been slowly building over the past couple of years, mostly on weekends and in spare moments: Cosmic XR, a mixed reality experience that brings space and the universe into your own room. This project began from my deep love for space, and the desire to let people not just observe, but reach out and interact with planets, moons, and other celestial wonders — to touch, rotate, and scale them with their hands, as if they were right in front of them. For those familiar with HoloLens, many parts of this app are inspired by the open-source Galaxy Explorer project, which played a key role in building many parts of the experience. I’m grateful to build on that foundation. As a single-person project, there’s still much to improve — technically, visually, and content-wise. But I wanted to share it now, in hopes that it brings a sense of curiosity and wonder to anyone who tries it. If you're into space and immersive experiences, I’d love for you to give it a try — you can explore it without purchasing through the “Try Before You Buy” feature on Meta Quest Store: meta.com/experiences/cosmic-… I hope this experience reminds us of how small we are — and how precious each moment is, a fleeting blink in the vast timeline of the universe. Disclaimer: Cosmic XR was designed and developed entirely in my personal time using personal resources as a passion project. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by my employer. #CosmicXR #MixedReality #AugmentedReality #VR #MetaQuest #Cosmos #Space #NASA #galaxy #milkyway #Quest3 #Quest3S #Quest2 #QuestPro #HandTracking #SpatialComputing #SpatialInteraction #SpaceApp #STEM #XRforEducation #PassionProject #Astrophysics #JWST #STEMLearning #EdTech #Astronomy #SpaceScience #JamesWebb #Hubble #SpaceExploration
