ALT Perspective "An imagined epidemic necessitates an imagined cause, which has led the administration to pursue questionable sources of environmental causation while ignoring other, well-established contributory factors." "Challenging Claims of an Autism Epidemic — Misconceptions and a Path Forward" by Tara Eicher, Ph.D., John Quackenbush, Ph.D., and Ari Ne’eman, Ph.D.

ALT In general, Ne’eman thinks that “the average autistic person, as well as the average family member, doesn’t wake up in the morning thinking, ‘Have they found a better mouse model?’” They do think about whether they’ll be able to find a full-time caretaker who is covered by insurance, or what the newest adaptive communication devices will be capable of. When autistic self-advocates were largely excluded from the decision-making process, funding for things that would help them immediately, like communication assistance or housing support, fell by the wayside.
