📢 Call for Papers | QEH Article Collection
🌊 Anthropisation of Riverscapes
The submission portal is now open for a new Article Collection in Quaternary Environments and Humans (QEH), the INQUA journal, focusing on the long-term transformation of floodplains and riverscapes through human activity.
Floodplains are dynamic socio-environmental systems that have been reshaped by human societies for millennia. This Article Collection explores when and how floodplains became part of a Fluvial Anthroposphere, and the socio-ecological processes involved in their transformation.
Contributions are particularly encouraged that bring together interdisciplinary perspectives from:
🌍 Geoscience
🏺 Archaeology
🌱 Ecology
📜 History
The collection welcomes innovative methodologies and conceptual approaches addressing anthropogenic floodplain transformation, fluvial societies, and the anthropisation of riverscapes across historical and prehistoric timescales.
📅 Submission deadline: 31 March 2027
📝 Articles will be published individually as soon as their respective peer-review and production processes are completed.
Guest Editors:
Antony Brown | Kathryn Fitzsimmons | Natascha Mehler | Paolo Mozzi | Gerrit-Jasper Schenk | Lukas Werther | Christoph Zielhofer

Three years of exploring the Human–Environment Nexus
Since its launch at the INQUA Congress in Rome in 2023, Quaternary Environments and Humans (QEH) has developed into an interdisciplinary platform for research on how humans, environments, and climate have interacted throughout the Quaternary.
A new editorial by Andrea Zerboni, Silvia M. Bello, Fumie Iizuka, Jan Kolář, and Thijs van Kolfschoten reflects on the journal’s first three years and its expanding scientific scope.
From geoarchaeology, bioarchaeology, material culture, and modelling to major questions surrounding human evolution, dispersal, subsistence, behavioural modernity, language, ecology, and climate change, QEH is increasingly providing a space where established ideas can be reconsidered and new interdisciplinary perspectives can emerge.
The editorial also highlights major contributions including the interdisciplinary investigation of Homo erectus from the submerged landscapes of the Madura Strait, Indonesia, demonstrating how geological, palaeontological, taphonomic and archaeological evidence can together reshape our understanding of Pleistocene human dispersal.
As Quaternary research continues to evolve, QEH aims to remain a meeting ground for disciplines seeking to understand one of the most important questions in our past:
How have humans shaped-and been shaped by-the environments they inhabited?

Every year, INQUA funds and supports dozens of research projects spanning every continent, from paleoclimate reconstructions in the Southern Hemisphere to landslide hazard networks in the Andes, coastal science in Australia, and human origins research in India.
These projects share one mission: build global networks, empower early-career and developing-country researchers, advance Quaternary science, and bring that science back to society.
In this year's Midterm Project Review, teams from six continents came together online to share a year of fieldwork, new publications, shared databases, and growing collaborations -setting the stage for the next INQUA Congress.
Here's a look inside.
