The CFO job has gone from accountant to banker to builder, and the whole finance function is being rebuilt around it:
1. Data stopped being the bottleneck. AI pulls and reconciles data across systems, so teams spend more time acting on numbers instead of chasing them.
2. The finance stack is becoming part of the finance team. AI-native tools stand up in days, pull their own data, and turn a monthly close into a daily one.
3. The rise of the finance engineer. Finance people proficient in Claude Code or Codex are building their own tools.
4. The finance team gets smaller and higher leverage. The old heuristic of finance at 5% of headcount is heading to 2% for the leanest teams.
5. Planning becomes continuous. Usage-based revenue (tokens, API calls) moves too fast for a monthly forecast, so planning shifts from annual budgets to a live view.
6. Controls become a critical feature of the product. Every number an agent touches keeps an audit trail back to its source, and finance still owns sign-off.
7. Finance gets a bigger mandate. Compute spend, people versus software, and build versus buy are now finance decisions.
"The CFO is becoming a builder and architect of the company's operating system... The job is still finance, but more of the job now is designing how finance gets done."

The Terafab is going to become the largest and most valuable building on Earth by a long shot.
This is so much more than just another semiconductor fab.
It’s going to be @Tesla, @SpaceX, xAI, and Intel building what will become the most important AI manufacturing complex EVER created.
The goal that Elon has for this is staggering…
Produce more than 1 terawatt of AI compute every year - roughly 50× today’s global AI chip output.
That’s the kind of scale you would only build when you believe the future needs far more compute than the world can currently make.
About 25% of that output is expected to power Tesla’s Optimus robots, Full Self-Driving vehicles, and Cybercabs. The other 75% is aimed at SpaceX’s vision for solar-powered AI satellites and orbital data centers, where compute will not be limited by Earth’s power grid.
Also, instead of spreading chip design, mask making, fabrication, memory, advanced packaging, and testing across multiple locations like the industry does today, the Terafab will bring nearly everything under one roof. That means engineers will be able to design a chip, build it, test it, improve it, and repeat the process much faster than the rest.
The full complex is expected to exceed 100 million square feet, making it larger than any semiconductor facility ever attempted. The first phase alone represents a $16.8 billion investment, with long-term plans most likely reaching far beyond that.
Elon has said it plainly… existing chip suppliers simply can’t produce enough AI chips for where Tesla and SpaceX are headed.
If Optimus scales to millions, and eventually billions, and SpaceX starts deploying AI data centers in orbit, the world will need an entirely new level of manufacturing capacity.
That’s what Terafab is really about.
History will remember it as the factory that powered the age of intelligent robots, autonomous transportation, and AI infrastructure in space.

Perplexity founder Aravind Srinivas explains the “user is never wrong” philosophy of Larry Page
Aravind recounts a story of Larry Page’s meeting with the CEO of Excite. Excite was the #2 search engine behind Yahoo at the time, and they were interested in buying Google. The two CEOs compared the search results of their products side-by-side.
When Google’s results were clearly better, Excite’s CEO tried to excuse his product’s performance: “If you typed the query this way, it would’ve worked.”
Aravind believes this is an important difference in philosophy between Google and Excite. Larry Page believed that a search engine should give high quality answers regardless of what the user typed:
“You do all the magic behind the scenes so that even if the user was lazy, even if there were typos… they still got the answer and they love the product.”
Today Google dominates search, and most people have never heard of Excite.
Aravind believes the best AI products will adopt this same philosophy and that “prompt engineering” won’t be a long-term thing.
“I think you want to make products work where a user doesn’t even ask for something. You know that they want it and you give it to them… People are lazy and a better product should be one that allows you to be more lazy, not less. Products need to have some magic to them, and the magic comes from letting you be more lazy.”
