Though it's often said that the history of capitalism is Eurocentric, few have attempted to rewrite it from a non-Eurocentric perspective. Historian Andrew B. Liu rises to the challenge with "Tea War: A History of Capitalism in China and India." jacobinmag.com/2021/01/tea-w…

Tomorrow is publication day for ANTI-FASCIST ECONOMICS! 🌹🌾 I wrote this book so that everyone can read it. I’m delighted that Booklist describes it as "a vision of economics centred on affordability" that’s accessible to all. 🔗 Order your copy now via the links below.

ANTHROPIC’S IPO VALUATION EXPECTATIONS DROP FROM $2 TRILLION TO $1.5 TRILLION Some investors are considering a $1.5 trillion valuation for Anthropic’s upcoming IPO, down 25% from earlier expectations of $2 trillion. Anthropic reported $16.8 billion in Q3 revenue, up 45% quarter-over-quarter, but growth slowed sharply after revenue more than doubled in Q2. The company also reported adjusted profitability for the quarter. The key concern: Slowing revenue growth and rising AI infrastructure costs could weigh on one of the most anticipated IPOs. TRUMP’S NEW PRESS SECRETARY LIVED IN BEIJING Katie Zacharia’s first job after graduating was to work in Beijing, as an outside counsel (lawyer) for the World Bank Group. The 42-year-old lived in Beijing for three years, working for a US law firm, and learned to get by in Mandarin Chinese. From this week, the world will start to see her in her new role, as press secretary for Donald Trump, taking the role formerly held by Karoline Leavitt, who has had a second child. But Zacharia also knows modern media – her most recent job was senior communications adviser to Truth Social, the Twitter clone owned by Trump Media & Technology Group. . KNOWING THE REAL CHINA The mix of influences is interesting—while fiercely loyal to the US Republicans, her experience in China means that she will know what the country is really like, as opposed to the carefully constructed “giant dystopian gulag of a billion prisoners” narrative constructed by the western mainstream media. The Chinese have given up waiting for the media to deliver a truthful picture, instead hoping that visitors will do the trick - so it will be encouraging that the list of people who have been to China including individuals at the top of the US ladder – including a woman with the ear of the President. Also familiar with the real China is frequent visitor Maye Musk, mother of the world’s richest man, Elon Musk. . .

People being horrified by the fact that an execution will be shown publicly, rather than by it happening at all, is a good example of why we can't have death penalty abolition in this country. Executing this man in private doesn't really address the underlying moral issue here.

Remember when neoliberal econs told us in the post-Covid period that companies were NOT taking advantage of inflation to raise their own prices in excess of any cost increase? They also told us that industry concentration didn't explain post-Covid price hikes. Well, economists at Northeastern University tested that proposition and found good evidence for this practice--what non-econs might call "gouging" or "profiteering"--in the airline industry. Go give it a read! (link in next tweet)

Anwar Shaikh was awesome. 20 ya i emailed him out of the blue, and he invited me to his office. i knew NOTHING but he genuinely wanted to help me understand how to do historical, critical political economy. ended by saying to come by anytime. i still read his 70s essays on crisis
