Elated that our recent work has been published in @NatureComms! nature.com/articles/s41467-0… @iiscbangalore @chemengiisc Hydrogenation is a key process to convert carbon dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas, into valuable chemicals. It can help close the carbon cycle and potentially ameliorate global warming. However, understanding the mechanisms underlying this complex reaction is challenging because it involves thousands of elementary steps occurring simultaneously on catalyst surfaces.

I express our thanks to collaborators Santhosh Kotni and G Valavarasu from Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (@HPCL), Amol Amrute from @ASTARsg - Agency for Science, Technology and Research at Singapore, and Ambedkar Dukkipati from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). It is fulfilling that Anand is now a budding Assistant Professor at the Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (@MNNITALLD), Allahabad, while Swastik, Srinibas, and Rahul are successful PhD students at the University of Rochester (@UofR), IISc, and @Cornell University, respectively.

It was a particularly rewarding collaboration with experimentalists Dr. Santhosh and Dr. Valavarasu at HPCL, and Dr. Amol Amrute at A*STAR. Our heartfelt thanks to @HPCL for funding this fundamental research project at the Department of Chemical Engineering, IISc (@chemengiisc), and we look forward to more such industry-academia partnerships. Will be happy to hear any feedback!

Professors Duvvuri Subrahmanyam (@mangaloreman) & Pratikash Panda at IISc Bengaluru are doing some seriously cutting-edge work in high-speed flight. It is exciting science, with a forward-looking vision for building India’s aerospace capabilities. And that’s about as much as I’m willing to reveal! But something else about them deserves to be shouted from the rooftops. After stints at institutions such as Caltech, Princeton, Purdue, and Sandia Labs, they chose to come home and build here. That tells us something about the calibre of researchers India is now attracting back and about the world-class deep-tech ecosystem taking shape on our own soil. One of the most encouraging signs for India’s future is seeing exceptional researchers choose India not out of obligation, but out of ambition. The future isn’t on its way. It’s already being built. Quietly, boldly, and right here at home.

Happy to share our recent work, which has been featured in the “2026 Rising Stars in Materials Science” special issue of ACS Materials Au! doi.org/10.1021/acsmaterials… We report design rules for desalination membranes based on nanoporous 2D materials. We show that low edge charges sieve ions, but positive edge charges exclude boron, a difficult-to-remove contaminant. These design principles will enable the development of efficient, next-generation seawater desalination membranes for producing drinking water. The work was led by PhD student Pradeep Dhondi, and involved former postdoc Sagar Ghorai @sagar10649. Many thanks to @ANRFIndia and @Infy_Foundation for funding the work, and to @cdacindia Pune for providing access to the Param Siddhi-AI supercomputer. @iiscbangalore @chemengiisc @ACSPublications
