Hello again!
I joined Twitter in 2007, back when it was a weird little experiment, and stayed for nearly two decades as it became the place where I did my public thinking — signals, forecasts, arguments that occasionally changed my mind. I was there for the fail whale. Then, all my people left, and I stopped using the platform too. My conversations moved to private groups, and I’ve been mostly quiet on social media since.
After a long hiatus, I’m now back... on Substack. I'm lurking here, but if you want to chat you'll find me over there. The next few years will be stranger than most people are prepared for. Let's make sense of them together.

Over the weekend, Dario and Sam said that everyone in AI needs to slow down development. I graded the announcements against all fifteen principles I published in The Big Nine.

As you know, AI leaders are breathlessly calling for slower frontier model pacing to make sure humanity doesn't end.
In 2019, I wrote about this very situation in The Big Nine and offered concrete plans for what to do when we got to this day in the future.
I'm thrilled (read: extremely irritated) that our lawmakers sat on their hands and the debate now is more about market consolidation than safety. (1/ many)
The global alliance I proposed in that chapter — with independent inspections, shared vulnerability reporting, an actual governance structure — was never tried in the US.
I'd met with EU leaders several times, but by 2020 their attention had moved elsewhere.
I've republished the chapter in full, unedited, with a new intro showing what held up and what I got wrong.
I see no reason to keep treating the people creating the danger as the only people qualified to decide what happens next.
I'm angry. You should be too.

In 2017, I thought that the Rolling Stones would be dead but still making new music thanks to a nascent generative AI tool for music. I got the band wrong but the tech right.
