The cervix holds a kilogram of baby against gravity for nine months, then opens to ten centimetres, then closes again. It is a ring of tough collagen, and its job for most of a pregnancy is to stay shut while something inside it gets heavier every week. What it does chemically is the better part. It produces a plug of thick mucus that seals the entrance, and the plug is not just a cork. It carries antimicrobial peptides and antibodies, so anything that gets past the physical barrier meets a chemical one behind it. That plug sits there for months, guarding the entrance to a sterile space, in a part of the body that is nothing like sterile. Then the whole structure has to reverse itself. Over the last weeks the collagen holding it rigid is deliberately loosened and rearranged, water content rises, and a ring built to resist pressure becomes something that can stretch to the width of a human head. Ten centimetres, starting from an opening you would struggle to fit a pencil through. The membranes help. The bag of fluid presses down as a wedge, and while it stays intact it does the dilating without cutting off blood flow to the placenta during contractions. Afterwards it closes. Within days it is down to a fingertip, and within weeks it has rebuilt. Engineers spend careers on valves that seal under load and then open on command, and none of them also make their own disinfectant, know when to start, and rebuild themselves afterwards without being serviced. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK47…

Gaza has the highest concentration of child amputees in the world (at the peak of Israeli bombing, 10 kids were losing limbs daily), UNRWA says. And now Israel is now blocking prosthetic limbs from entering Gaza. All this has happened with US support or complicity.
🚨Aid coalition chief: Israel blocks wheelchairs, prosthetics, watermelons, and fresh produce from entering Gaza Athena Rayburn, executive director of the Association of International Development Agencies, which represents more than 100 humanitarian and development NGOs operating in the occupied Palestinian territory, detailed Israel’s sweeping restrictions on aid during a UN Security Council briefing Wednesday. 🔹Israel rejects scissors, crutches, wheelchairs and prosthetic limbs as “dual-use,” bars medical specialists and restricts engine oil so severely that its price has risen to 45 times normal levels, bringing aid operations to “an absolute breaking point,” Rayburn said. 🔹Israeli authorities have also rejected watermelon and onions under an unpublished “humanitarian policy,” deregistered more than 30 international aid groups and repeatedly moved the supposedly fixed Yellow Line, cutting access to at least 85 water points, schools and health clinics. “Humanitarian assistance, by its nature, cannot be conditioned,” Rayburn said, noting Israel was shrinking “almost daily” the physical space in Gaza where aid groups can operate.

They raped a man. They gang-raped him. They raped him so brutally that he had to be hospitalized. Doctors documented the injuries. The video of the assault was leaked. Now the rapists are free. This is not just unlawful and immoral. It is sick! #ThisIsIsrael

On the night of 14th August 1947, a flag flew on Jawaharlal Nehru's car as it went over Raisina Hill. It was the first time the tricolour we know today was ever flown. That flag had been stitched under the supervision of a 28 year old woman. Her name was Surayya Tyabji. She was born in 1919 in Hyderabad. She was a painter. Her work was later shown in London and in Jakarta. She was married to Badruddin Tyabji, a civil servant who was part of the group working on what independent India would look like. Everyone had assumed the flag was settled. Pingali Venkayya had designed the tricolour used by the Congress, with Gandhi's charkha in the middle. It had been carried through the freedom movement for over 20 years. Then, weeks before independence, a problem was raised. That flag was a party flag. A country that was about to include everyone could not fly the symbol of one political party. So the design had to be redone, quickly. The Tyabjis were given the job. They replaced the charkha with the Ashoka Chakra, the wheel from the Lion Capital of Ashoka at Sarnath. The reason was simple and deliberate. Ashoka belonged to all Indians, and to no party. Their daughter Laila Tyabji has written the family's account of it. Her mother drew the graphic version. The printing press at the Viceregal Lodge made the impressions. Everyone approved. The English historian Trevor Royle recorded in his book that the flag which flew on Nehru's car that night had been made by Tyabji's wife. On 22nd July 1947 the design was accepted by the Constituent Assembly. A report in the Times of India in January 1950 described that first flag as having been presented to the nation by the women of India at the midnight session of the Constituent Assembly on 14th August 1947. Before the flag, the same couple had worked on the national emblem. Nehru asked Badruddin to do something about it because he had an eye for these things. Surayya drew the version of the 4 lions that has been on every Indian government document since. She was 28 years old. She died in 1978 in Mumbai. Her daughter has said that neither of her parents ever felt they had designed the national emblem. They felt they had only reminded India of something that had always been part of its identity. Official records of the Constituent Assembly do not name individual contributors, so most textbooks still credit only Venkayya, and his work genuinely came first. But today, when the flag goes up, look at the wheel in the middle of it. A young Muslim woman put it there, on purpose, so that no Indian would be left out of it.

There are things in this world that should never happen and yet, they are happening. This story sounds like fiction. But this is our life. Two and a half years ago, when the Israeli army entered Al Shifa Hospital, they took a number of newborn babies from the maternity ward. Newborns. They were separated from their mothers, from the only warmth they had ever known and sent to Egypt. Without names. Without families. Without anyone to claim them. They disappeared. For more than a year, there was no news. No answers. No certainty about whether they were even alive. Yesterday, some of them were returned. And I cannot stop thinking about one moment. A mother standing there.. trying to describe her child. Describing the face of a baby she had only known for less than a week. Trying to recognize her own son through memory alone. Through fragments. Through hope. Through pain. Then, suddenly.. he is in front of her. Alive. She breaks. A joy so overwhelming it almost looks like grief. And the child? He looks at her .. without recognition. Without memory. Without the instinct that should have guided him back to her arms. He does not know her !! And perhaps what is even more devastating he does not know what a mother is. What kind of world separates a child from his mother before he even learns her face? What kind of war steals not only lives, but the most basic human bonds? This is not just loss. This is something deeper. Something colder. Something that tears at the very meaning of being human. This .. is what hell looks like. #WoundedGaza

During his illness, Stephen Lewis spent what little energy he had, protesting Israel’s genocide in Gaza. This fact will most likely be missing from most remembrances of him today. Canada lost a giant of humanity and social justice. Sending love to @avilewis & entire family.

A 13 year-old boy was assaulted in front of his family as they were leaving the Toronto Islamic Centre after prayers. As a dad of a daughter the same age, that angers me to the core. Another member of the congregation was reportedly punched as they were walking home. This is the same mosque that was targeted with racist and Islamophobic remarks and violent threats earlier this year. Our city’s Muslim community, along with the Jewish community and all communities, must always be able to practice their faith, be who they are and come together, peacefully and safely. I’m committed to continue working to build bridges and understanding. I have also been calling for all laws to be fully and effectively enforced to protect our communities from harassment, intimidation, hate, and violence. Let’s support the Toronto Islamic Centre’s congregation and let them know we stand with them. Ramadan Mubarak.
