By 1905 Ramon Casas was one of the best-known painters in Spain. He had shown at the Paris Salon since he was 17, won a first-class medal in Madrid for "The Charge" and painted King Alfonso XIII. He was 39.

They had less than ten years as husband and wife. Casas died in 1932, aged 66. Julia stayed on in their house and died in Barcelona in January 1941 of influenza and bronchopneumonia, aged 52. They were buried together in Montjuïc.

He painted her over a hundred times. They are both gone, but on the canvas she is still young, looking back at him. What Casas wanted to keep above all, the inspiration and the love, lives on in her. [END]
