Mac Lane's strictification for bicategories is part of the backbone of modern algebra. In the 90s-00s, it was generalised in a couple ways to dim 3. For many years it has been one of my “north stars” to prove a version in all higher dim.
Proud to announce one, joint w/ Chanavat:
Chanavat, Hadzihasanovic: Semi-strictification of $(\infty, n)$-categories arxiv.org/abs/2507.00146 arxiv.org/pdf/2507.00146 arxiv.org/html/2507.00146
I maintain that the best metaphor for mathematical work is highly constrained narrative or scriptwriting. Definitions are characters, theorems are plot points, a paper is a script, proof is "tightness" of the script.
The goal is to write a good script that is also tight.

The final Weil conjecture "controversy" can be seen as one author setting up an epic grand saga, and another deciding to write up part of the story as a humorous novella.

The future is, at once, far more prosaic and far more terrifying than you can imagine
We participate in a millenary tradition of philosophy and scholarship. Our work is in dialogue with Euclid, al-Khwarizmi, Newton, and Noether. Society can change, but the meaning is the same it always has been: to think thoughts that have never been thought before.
People who spend their lives explaining their made-up jobs and dumb start-up ideas get a kick out of mathematicians having to do the same. I think it's undignified to "justify" our profession. The appropriate answer to "what's the point of your job?" is "fire us and find out".
Seen a bunch of comments along the lines of: "what if it was 400 new medicines and treatments instead of 400 new theorems". I agree. It would be absurd to ever criticise pharmaceutical companies and the healthcare industry.
Yesterday I talked to the NYC Category Theory Seminar about the coherent self-dual omega-equivalence.
A recording is available.

Personally, I hope that AI solves all the Millennium Prize problems and all famous conjectures as soon as possible, because then there will be no more benchmarks to maxx and we will all be free to research what we want.
