Islam is not a religion of peace when it comes to women and children. Look at the doctrine and the results. Under classical Islamic teachings, a man can marry up to four wives, while a woman is restricted to one husband. A woman’s testimony is worth half of a man’s in many legal matters. Inheritance laws systematically give sons double the share of daughters. A husband is given the right to “discipline” his wife, including striking her, as stated in Quran 4:34. Child marriage is not condemned — Muhammad himself married Aisha when she was six and consummated the marriage when she was nine, according to the most authentic Hadith collections. That example is still used today to justify marrying young girls in multiple Muslim-majority countries. In places where Sharia is enforced, girls are frequently forced into marriage as children. Women who refuse can face violence, imprisonment, or death. Apostasy and blasphemy can carry the death penalty. Honor killings, female genital mutilation, and the legal inferiority of women are not “cultural accidents” in many of these societies — they are defended using Islamic texts and jurisprudence. Critics are told this is “not real Islam.” But the same texts, the same historical example of the prophet, and the same legal traditions keep producing the same outcomes across different countries and centuries. When a belief system repeatedly enables the legal and social abuse of women and children, it is not bigotry to call it out. It is honesty. Islam does not need to be “reformed” by outsiders. It needs to be rejected by anyone who values the equal dignity and protection of women and children.
