OPEN LETTER: Sally Rooney is a writer, not a terrorist. Her books must be available to the public. Their withdrawal from sale, on the basis of ill-conceived and draconian anti terror legislation, is an affront to basic principles of free speech and expression so long taken for granted in this country. We categorically reject censorship - whether direct or indirect - and urge the government to change course, amending the legislation which has led us to this point of repressive absurdity.

"Reading the World" is a new documentary about Paulo Freire, the acclaimed Brazilian educator whose revolutionary approach to teaching connected literacy to critical thinking and democratic participation. It draws on rare archival footage of 1960s Brazil and weaves together the memories of farmers, students and educators who took part in Freire’s culture circles, his method of teaching adults to read in as little as 40 hours by drawing on their own lives, communities and experiences. “Paulo Freire was one of the most influential educators of the past century and is still widely studied all around the world. But the studies often focus on his ideas, his philosophies, his books, and much less is known about his original praxis,” says co-director Catherine Murphy. democracynow.org/2026/9/22/r…

“Reading the World” is a remarkable new documentary about Paulo Freire, the acclaimed Brazilian educator whose revolutionary approach to teaching connected literacy to critical thinking and democratic participation. “One of the most important points of his philosophy is that everyone has knowledge,” says Maria Luisa Mendonça, a consulting producer for the documentary.

"the novel as a genre tends toward excess. ... proliferation, the plot develops like a cancer. If the writer follows a novel’s every lead, it becomes a jungle. The ambition to tell the whole story is inherent in the genre... there comes a moment when you have to kill the story"

We're deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Kenyan author Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o at the age 87. His words shaped and reshaped our grasp of African resistance and decolonisation under colonialism and the postcolonial era. Rest in power. #NgugiWaThiongo buff.ly/08Dt8tC
