I've spent the last few years working with hundreds of schools, enough to spot some patterns and (I hope) to write some useful threads over the coming months.
Here's the first one...

How to think about reading across the curriculum
I believe that the ‘Just reading’ findings from the University of Sussex have the potential for significant impact on outcomes for all pupils, particularly those with lower starting points.

Watched a brilliant reading lesson today, the teacher didn’t tell the children, there was an amazing discussion about interpretation of the book. Children supported their interpretation with evidence, there was challenge
It was rich and deep, we all understood the book better

Concepts as connections over time:
The reason that the concepts and big ideas in the subjects are helpful is that they are like ‘holding baskets’ for a lot of information.
They are like the boulders across the curriculum that gather more moss over time.
Love how there are so many books out there representing our diverse world. These have to be planned for in our schools to ensure children can empathise with others and to ensure that diversity is embedded 📚 @EmpathyLabUK #EmpathyMatters @WalesAndWorld – at Llantrisant, Wales

Whenever we do one of our WCR lessons around class novel (2 x a week), my first question after the quick quiz is to summarise what happened since the last time we studied it in depth. It's always gone well, but a slight tweak of 'key points' has definitely made it more accessible

When selecting a class book, it needs to be something that will make the children laugh, cry, think, gasp and imagine, not something that has a tenuous and forced link to whatever the current topic is. Even better if the children sometimes have input into choosing it themselves.
