Oracy is talk for learning, learning to talk and learning about talk, all three of which are deeply interconnected. It is not just ‘performance of talk’ in limited formal arenas (debate, speeches, interviews) but also productive dialogue being at the heart of all learning.

Why effective writing instruction requires a writer-teacher
“Just as it would be difficult to teach children the tuba if you’ve never played one, so it is difficult to teach children to be writers if you never write.”

For 50 years I’ve been part of oracy in action, sharing poems orally, pupils learning to perform poems, talking about poems, writing poems, talking about the poems they write, building poems orally. Feels odd to see people despising this sort of thing.
I would never assume to tell a heart surgeon how to do their job? How come anyone can assume the role of education expert and critique teachers?

What will you write about next?
What are you going to read next?
What can I help you with next?

Following the AFL Trade Period is akin to being stoned to death with popcorn. Nothing happens, then nothing happens again and then it all happens in a mad rush. Ten, long, tedious days of often meaningless speculation come down to a few hours of frantic activity.

Taking the opportunity to write in settings/places ‘around’ the school increases awareness of the developing writer to the need to incorporate the senses. Writing, like reading is a form of portable magic.
To write poetry effectively young poets have to know it well. Immersion in broad spectrum poetry is therefore essential. Help them discover their poet's heart.

The more we work to reveal a writer's potential, the more we discover our very own potential to teach.

For writer's notebooks to reach their potential they have to be viewed as a resource that can assist young writers beyond the classroom. If they are confined to the classroom they will eventually be viewed as just another work book.
