Popped back on to Twitter just to block all the people who think I don't deserve to call myself Dr or Consultant Medical Physicist, and think I somehow got this job without understanding IRMER compliance. I mean, for real?! Some of you *seriously* need to spend less time here.

So she was first author on his key paper - in fact she's on most of his key papers, yet she didn't get the Nobel Prize, in spite of the fact they could have given 3 awards, not just 2. Explain to me how STEM is not institutionally sexist.
Congratulations to our 2024 medicine laureate Victor Ambros ✨ This morning he celebrated the news of his prize with his colleague and wife Rosalind Lee, who was also the first author on the 1993 'Cell' paper cited by the Nobel Committee. #NobelPrize

7 Men. All science Nobels this year went to men. Well done men.
BREAKING NEWS The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2024 #NobelPrize in Chemistry with one half to David Baker “for computational protein design” and the other half jointly to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper “for protein structure prediction.”

Great to see data to back up anecdata...
Sadly, we still default to granting more respect to men than women. 8 studies: we're >2x as likely to call male politicians, athletes, teachers, and authors by their last names. It matters: surnames signal higher status. It's long past time to use consistent standards.

Factcheck: Maternity pay has existed since 1911 & is essential for women to make informed, supported reproductive choices. It is also currently at a level where 71% of women worry 'a lot' about money during maternity leave and 35% of new mothers skip meals to afford to live.
NEW - Kemi Badenoch tells Times Radio that maternity pay has "gone too far." “We need to have more personal responsibility. There was a time when there wasn’t any maternity pay and people were having more babies.”

This isn't an AI fail. It's a human fail. Check the settings, check who emails are going to, check if you still want it to keep recording. Using AI responsibly means, among other things, putting guardrails in place and checking they're working.
A VC firm I had a Zoom meeting with used Otter AI to record the call, and after the meeting, it automatically emailed me the transcript, including hours of their private conversations afterward, where they discussed intimate, confidential details about their business.

Kevin is so brave here giving voice to the experience of healthcare workers at the Covid19 frontline, in an overstretched NHS at the mercy of a spineless, self-serving government. This is why I have absolutely zero time for anyone who calls the Covid19 pandemic a hoax.
Prof @Kevin_Fong giving the most devastating and moving testimony to the Covid Inquiry of visiting hospital intensive care units at the height of the second wave in late Dec 2020. The unimaginable scale of death, the trauma, the loss of hope. Please watch this 2min clip.

Nah, utter tosh. Science impacts every area of society, it is just as political as any other field of human endeavour. Well done Scientific American for seeing what is at stake in the forthcoming US presidential election, and backing the candidate who accepts facts and data.
"'Scientific American' is taking criticism for making a political endorsement, and rightly so: Such an endorsement not only undermines public trust in science, but it’s also insulting to readers," @RadioFreeTom writes: theatlantic.com/newsletters/…

The IgNobels are often mocked but they are often genuinely revelatory. An excellent example -

Similarly, I'm not that bothered about the box at Arsenal, but in general I don't mind that we're questioning what the PM gets for free and what he doesn't. Makes a change from Johnson constantly freeloading and everyone just shrugging.
This Arsenal box thing is farcical. Keir is paying season ticket holder who is unable to take his ordinary seat due to legitimate security issues that a Prime Minister faces. Arsenal are providing him with a safe space for him to watch the games that he pays to watch.

I'm a Medical Physicist, a Positron Emission Tomography specialist. The technology, in its current form, is almost exactly as old as I am. It's so exciting to see new developments year on year on year throughout my career and work on implementing and optimising them.
it must be truly wild to be a boomer in biology like going from using genetic linkage to map genes to being able to do single cell full transcriptome sequencing across millions of cells in the span of a career is crazyyyyyy

I would also suggest that a woman demanding to be paid what she's worth is still considered a "talking point", whereas a man making the same request is not news.

Get so tired of STEM businesses/courses/departments saying there is nothing they can do about gender balance, it's 'naturally' that way. Glad to see this is now officially a comedy excuse!
Things that I'm sure are genuinely hard - Running a successful professional comedy club. Fair enough. Things that are easy - Making this statement without saying that an excess of male comedians is as natural as an excess of female nursery teachers.
