It appears @PETA is making progress in it's mission to shut down @NIH monkey experiments in Oregon.
After hearing over the last year from state legislators, PETA, tens of thousands of Oregonians, and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Board of Directors today unanimousely passed a resolution authorizing negotiations with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to end all experiments on monkeys and transition the federally funded Oregon National Primate Research Center into a sanctuary, a move that would mark a revolution in progressive science and animal welfare.
PETA says the primate center, which currently kills some 1,300 monkeys a year in experiments but breeds to keep the total number at 5,000, will stop breeding monkeys as OHSU devises a plan to end 60 years of much-criticized tests in which experimenters forcefully pumped nicotine into monkeys, addicted monkeys to alcohol, fed pregnant monkeys junk food diets and then forcibly removed from them and killed their babies, and repeatedly, painfully electro-ejaculated male monkeys, causing decades of suffering.
“This is a glorious day for monkeys and for science,” says PETA Senior Vice President @kathygfrompeta
“Research has moved beyond monkey experiments and into cutting-edge science with AI, organs-on-chips, and more, and PETA thanks OHSU president Dr. Shereef Elnahal, the board of directors, and NIH for shifting toward human-based technologies, while still caring for the monkeys who remain at the primate center.”
How PETA’s Unstoppable Campaign is Turning the Oregon National Primate Research Center into a Haven: After intense pressure from us, Oregonians, & state legislators, @OHSUNews is negotiating with the U.S. government to end all experiments on monkeys at the ONPRC & turn it into a sanctuary. Celebrate this win for science & primates, & see how we got it done.
Shout-out to actress Edie Falco, PETA Honorary Board member, who was mentioned this week during the EPA Administrator, Lee Zeldin’s announcement to phase out animal tests. Thank you to Edie, Administrator Zeldin, EPA staff, and all who made this possible!

Statement from @peta Senior Vice President @kathygfrompeta about reports that @CDCgov is ending all primate experiments:
"Champagne corks are popping inside PETA's headquarters today as it celebrates a tremendous victory for animals and for science: the phase out of experiments on monkeys at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). PETA thanks the administration for taking this decisive, long awaited action—one we’ve pressed for nonstop and that reflects what the undeniable evidence that experiments on monkeys aren’t helping humans one iota, as the four-decade failed effort to create a marketable HIV vaccine has shown.
For years, endangered and often infected long-tailedmacaques have been funneled into U.S. laboratories. CDC’s own data shows monkeys arriving with tuberculosis, melioidosis, and other pathogens, weak testing protocols, and a supply chain riddled with escapes, disease lapses, and regulatory failures.
PETA has exposed these dangers at every turn, and today’s announcement proves that the system is finally confronting the truth.
PETA is calling on the administration to build on this breakthrough: shut down the primate centers, end the monkey-import pipeline, and move every federal agency toward state-of-the-art, human-relevant science.
Today, the CDC made a historic, visionary decision—one that protects public health, respects endangered species, and recognizes that the future of research is animal-free. Now every other federally funded primate facility must be next."
