Damn, the Cookie Brigade, a volunteer group which sells cookies at PAX raising money for a charity, can no longer go around PAX selling cookies because the convention center caterer doesn't want them there: reddit.com/r/PAX/comments/16…

I really wish WireGuard had something akin to ipsec transport mode. I run transport mode at home to transparently encrypt traffic between my trusted hosts. It's great as it guarantees my trusted hosts aren't talking with any rogue devices in my home.

The kernel (in concert with strongswan) transparently negotiates transport mode whenever traffic goes to/from known hosts. The IP addresses remain the same, as only the packet payloads are encrypted. I'm not aware of any non-ipsec approach that would do that transparently for me.

In the 90s the FAA published posters of "The Dirty Dozen" - The 12 most common causes of mistakes in aviation. I think it has an incredible amount of overlap with incidents in tech: faasafety.gov/files/gslac/li…

Today I finished migrating a 40k core, single threaded, monolithic python app into Kubernetes. It only took ~8 months and a third of my sanity.

Just fixed a monitoring system which has been dropping metrics for years due to overwhelmed UDP buffers. Fix was to reverse the iptables "every nth" rules - they were in the opposite order so proc 2 was getting 1/2 of packets, proc 3 was getting 1/6th of the packets, and so on.

I ordered some smoke alarms from Amazon, "Shipped and Sold by Amazon", and what they sent me is clearly used. The product box is taped back together, the contents are loose, and the alarms themselves are all scuffed up. First time I've encountered that with non-third-party stuff.

Visual version of PA Dems' analysis Most of the counties with many votes remaining (especially Philly, but even the next few largest) are ones we expect to lean heavily Biden
As Pennsylvania counties continue to count mail-in ballots, we have been monitoring the returns. Based on the reported remaining ballots, we maintain the belief that Joe Biden is on track to win Pennsylvania and the presidency. drive.google.com/file/d/1Jir…

A story of how I wasted hours investigating an apparent CPU jump which turned out to be a graphing issue, told in pictures:

tl;dr, CPU metric datapoints tracking the various CPU metrics were being summed together. The monitoring system was reporting a subset of those datapoints at a one-second offset. This was causing the summation to break. Once the datapoints realigned the summation became correct.
