Here is another case of coarse misrepresentation: in “A Brief History of Landscape Research” Marc Antrop (U Ghent, Belgium) claims there are societies with and without landscape. He asserts unlike Europeans, Middle Eastern cultures are societies without landscape...

The smart city is dead — if it was even alive in the first place. In its place, as I argue in this new essay, an urban war machine is emerging that is built to empower police, not the public or planners. Welcome to the captured city. reallifemag.com/the-captured…

Great points! Unpaid internships everywhere must stop. They are detrimental to the value of the work we do as designers, and inhumane.
Architects (like Ishigama) who rely on unpaid interns and other questionable/predatory employment practices do not deserve to win public commissions — high-profile or otherwise. What they do deserve is to be called out. architectsjournal.co.uk/1004…

Not to mention that unpaid internships make these “opportunities” available for only those who can afford paying to work, or take on considerable loans. Forever locking the profession in a cycle of privilege and debt.

As Hudson Yards opens, a video review of the biggest, slickest private development in New York in a century. “Hudson Yards glorifies a kind of surface spectacle,” @kimmelman writes, “as if the peak ambitions of city life were consuming luxury goods.” nyti.ms/2TNPYGa
