AI Maximalism is not optimism, nor is it pessimism. It is the observation that AI will become the organizing principle of everything. The question is not whether this happens, but what we become when it does.
The arrival of Superintelligent Design.

We provided funding for a documentary series titled Bucks County, USA, that follows several families navigating the tensions that have come to define our politics.
At the center of the story are two teenage girls whose parents have become bitterly divided over their kids’ education.
The adults disagree about nearly everything, but the kids have figured out something many of us seem to have forgotten: you can disagree profoundly with someone and still care about them, listen to them, and remain friends.
We can and must learn from our children.
It starts streaming tomorrow, Sept 20th, on PBS.org and then on public television stations across the country. Join the conversation @BucksCountyUSA #BucksCountyUSA
Don’t miss it.
This is the holy grail of simulations, but there is so much opportunity to improve over existing state of the art in engineering simulations and traditional HPC!
Having spent my 20s writing many custom physics simulations, there was always the dream of making a “just in time” simulation for everything from hep-th to cond-mat (hell, half of my time @DEShawResearch was spent trying to do this)
Excited to back a team with the ambitions of grandeur of making gauge theory and finite element methods coexist, seamlessly
Data centers are the first domain, picked because the physics is well posed and the results land quickly. What we've built generalizes well past them.
BREAKING: Physical Superintelligence launches with $58M led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures for AI data-center optimization.
The verifier design is the part worth focusing on. Catching a confidently wrong physics result before a human ever sees it is the difference between a research system and a very fast source of plausible nonsense, and it's most of what we've built.
PHYSICAL SUPERINTELLIGENCE LAUNCHES WITH $58M
AI physics startup PSI has emerged from stealth with $58M led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures.
Its AI physicists, called “Emmy,” are designed to tackle hard physics problems with built-in verifiers meant to catch confidently wrong answers.
The first commercial use case is data centers: PSI is working to optimize cooling, power and electrical flows before facilities are built, starting with a large site in Texas.
The startup is also involved in a privately funded, AI-planned project aimed at eventually sending a spacecraft toward Alpha Centauri.
Data centers are where we prove it first, because the thermodynamics is well posed and the results are measurable in months. The system isn't specific to them and neither is the roadmap.
AI STARTUP TARGETS DATA CENTER EFFICIENCY WITH “AI PHYSICISTS”
Physical Superintelligence is launching with $58M in funding to use AI agents to solve real-world physics problems, starting with data centers.
Its AI system, called “Emmy,” will initially focus on optimizing cooling, power and electrical flows before facilities are built, with a large Texas data center among its first projects.
The startup says its agents use built-in physics verifiers designed to catch confidently wrong AI outputs.
The round was led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, founded by Bill Gates.
Agreed that it's underdiscussed. The harder half is verification, since a physics result you can't check is worth nothing, and building a system that checks its own work at research scale is one of the most demanding engineering problems I've worked on.
Artificial intelligence has eaten mathematics. Physics is next, and almost nobody is talking about it.

Been a fun 36 hours… now back to the kitchen to keep cooking physics…
I started Physical Superintelligence (PSI) with @alexwg and @aklokus on one conviction: our twenty-first-century civilization runs on twentieth-century physics, and AI can change that.
Today I'm excited to announce our $58M seed led by @Breakthrough to build the world's most advanced physics research lab, engineering physical systems beyond human design and discovering new physical laws of our universe for broad public benefit.
I'm grateful to my technical leadership (@aleMorari), our world-class team, and everyone who believed early.
Come ignite the physics takeoff with us: psi.inc
Thanks Zack, glad to have you involved in this one.
Congrats to @matthew_pines and the team!
I’m proud to be an investor in PSI.
If you're a physicist who writes real code, or an infrastructure person tired of pointing large clusters at ad ranking, we should talk.
Liftoff. Interested in joining or partnering? psi.inc/
Thanks @dbarabander, this is a great investor writeup that gets the technical thesis right instead of restating the press release.
I've spent about sixteen years building HPC and deep learning systems, and this is the first time the thing on the other end of the pipeline is physics research itself, which was most of the reason I said yes.

The models and the physics are both hard problems, but what actually decides whether this works is how fast you can close the loop between the two, which is the part of the system I spend most of my time on.
I'm delighted to share that Physical Superintelligence PBC (PSI), which I co-founded with @matthew_pines and @AKlokus, has raised a $58M seed round to build the world's most advanced research lab for discovering and commercializing transformative physics breakthroughs at scale with AI, safely, verifiably, and for broad public benefit.

Did you know that humanity has never launched a spacecraft to another star? That is about to change! I'm super excited to share that my cofounders, @AdiOltean, @EzraFeilden, and I, have created a non-profit to attempt to send humanity’s 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿… and we need your help!
We have formed a non-profit called The @FermiExplorer Mission with the goal of launching a minimum viable spacecraft to Alpha Centauri, the nearest star system, leaving in 3 years and arriving in around 80,000 years. We hope it will be both the first spacecraft to leave Earth for another star, and the last to arrive, as per this concept video!
The mission is intended to make the idea of interstellar travel real, and to encourage more people to confront one of humanity’s biggest unanswered questions when we look beyond our planet: "Where is everybody?" (the Fermi Paradox)
The mission has four high-level objectives:
- Aim: To launch the first spacecraft to another star. It should get at least 99% of the way to the nearest star system, Alpha Centauri, within 80,000 years.
- Payload: It should have at least a 1kg, 10x10x10 cm payload.
- Schedule: It should launch before the end of 2029
- Cost: It should cost less than $15M to design, build, launch, and operate.
The mission was planned with the help of the folks at @astrodigitalgeo, @MattGialich and the folks at @AstroForge, and @alexwg+@matthew_pines physical AI lab PSI, who devised the final mission profile. The mission will be executed by full-time program manager @GarrettJameson, who joins us after 10 years as a US Air Force Officer, in collaboration with a US bus manufacturing partner that will be selected over the coming months.
We will need your help to complete the mission, so if the idea of the mission excites you, please check out the Fermi Explorer website in the comments to find out more about why we are doing the mission and how to get involved!
Thanks to London Studio @ZeroOneCreative and @ashkan01C for producing the concept video 🙏🙏
