Have solar panels that have reached the end of their useful life? ☀️♻️
Alberta’s new solar panel recycling program provides a way to recycle eligible solar panels responsibly.
For small quantities, participating electronics recycling depots can accept solar panels, subject to site capacity and safety requirements.

With Phase II of Alberta’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system, eligible registered multi-family buildings can now receive collection for single-use products, packaging and paper products (PPP).
That means more residents can recycle their everyday household materials right where they live.
EPR—making recycling more consistent and accessible across Alberta.
Alberta’s Electronics Recycling Program (Renewables) - Solar Panel launched on October 1, 2026.
If your business supplies eligible solar panels in Alberta, you’ll need to register with ARMA.
Already have an ARMA Connect account? If ARMA has already contacted your business, please do not create a new account.

With Phase II of Alberta’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system, single-use products, packaging and paper products (PPP) are now covered by one list of eligible materials across Alberta.
This creates greater consistency in how Alberta’s recycling system is structured, helping create a clearer and more consistent experience for Albertans while providing a common foundation for communities, producers and PROs.

Solar power is growing. So is the need to plan for what happens to solar panels at the end of their useful life.
Estimates indicate Canada could see up to 800,000 tonnes of end-of-life solar panels by 2050.
Alberta is preparing for that future. With the launch of our Solar Panel Recycling Program, eligible end-of-life solar panels can now be collected and recycled through Alberta’s regulated recycling system.
By establishing Canada’s first formal solar recycling program, Alberta is laying the foundation for a local recycling industry and creating opportunities to attract investment, innovation, and recycling capacity to the province.
It’s an important step in keeping valuable materials in use and building a more circular economy.

Recycling is more than what we keep out of the landfill.
In 2025, Alberta’s PPP EPR program contributed more than $160 million to GDP, generated $75 million in wages, contributed $10.1 million in taxes and supported 1,230 full-time equivalent jobs.
A stronger recycling system means a stronger circular economy!

Since Phase I launched in April 2025, communities across Alberta have been working with producers and PROs to establish the foundation for Alberta’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system.
Today, approximately 97% of Alberta’s population is represented in EPR.
And there’s still room to grow. Communities that have not yet registered can still join the system.

Today marks another important step forward for recycling in Alberta as Phase II of the province’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system gets underway.
Our CEO, Ed Gugenheimer, and VP, EPR, Vahid Rashidi, were in Calgary today to mark the start of this next phase alongside the City of Calgary and Circular Materials.
Phase II expands the range of packaging and paper products Albertans can recycle, brings multi-family homes into the system, and creates a more consistent recycling system across the province.
It’s encouraging to see communities, producers, and recycling partners working together to build a system that makes recycling easier and captures more materials, building our circular economy and inspiring a future without waste.

Today, Alberta launches Canada’s first formal solar recycling program.
As solar energy continues to grow, so is the need to responsibly manage solar panels at the end of their useful life. Alberta is taking action now—building a recycling system that keeps valuable materials in use and supports a more circular economy.
It’s another step toward Inspiring a Future Without Waste.

Phase II of Alberta’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system for single-use products, packaging and paper products (PPP) is here.
This milestone builds on years of planning, collaboration and hard work by government, municipalities, Indigenous communities, producers, PROs, processors, service providers, ARMA and, importantly, Albertans.
Phase II brings a more standardized approach to PPP recycling across the province and expands collection to eligible multi-family buildings.
It’s an important step in building on the foundation established through Phase I and strengthening Alberta’s approach to recycling.
Read Ed Gugenheimer’s message on what this milestone means for Alberta’s recycling system and the people who helped make it possible.
