When we come to a proverbial fork in the road, how do we decide whether to go right or left?
If we had lived in the ancient world, one popular, widespread option was divination. People cast lots, watched the flight of birds, interpreted dreams, consulted household gods, examined the entrails of sacrificed animals, or used arrows as omens.
We see three of these practices in Ezekiel 21, which we read today in Bible in One Year. The king of Babylon comes to “the parting of the way” and uses divination. He “shakes the arrows; he consults the teraphim; he looks at the liver” (21:21). These were ancient methods of seeking supernatural guidance about which road to take.
We might shake our heads at such pagan practices. And rightly so. Scripture condemns divination.
But these ancient people did understand two things that many modern people have forgotten. First, when faced with a difficult decision, they believed they needed divine help from outside themselves. Second, they believed that the future was not in their hands but in the hand of god(s).
They were looking in all the wrong places, of course, but at least they didn't believe the modern lie that we live in a closed universe where God doesn't exist, and everything is ultimately up to us.
So what do we as Christians do when we stand at the crossroads? When neither path is forbidden by God but we are unsure which to take?
We pray to the one true God. We ask our Father for wisdom, discernment, and guidance. We use the minds he has given us, seek wise counsel, and then make the best decision we can.
Having set our feet on that path, we know that the future remains in his hands.
We are not at the whim of capricious gods and goddesses. Neither does everything depend upon us getting every decision exactly right.
We live in a world shepherded by the pierced hands of Jesus Christ, who loved us and gave himself for us. Our lives are held by the Father, redeemed by the Son, and guided by the Holy Spirit.
So when you reach a crossroads, pray for wisdom, then walk forward in faith.
Whichever road you take, you belong to the one who is himself the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

O Lord, You are high above all the earth,
yet You draw near to those who call upon Your name.
The heavens declare Your majesty,
and the earth is filled with the evidence of Your goodness.
Before the mountains rose,
before the seas were gathered into their depths,
before the morning knew its first light,
You were God.

Imagine you're having a conversation with two men. One has gray hair, a long gray beard, and an equally ancient way of speaking. The other is younger and describes things in a way that feels new. Yet both tell the same kind of story about the same person, just from different perspectives and in different languages.
That’s what happens today in Bible in One Year as we read Ezekiel 1 and John 8 as the prophet and evangelist tell us the same truth: Jesus is Yahweh.
Ezekiel, the older Hebrew prophet, tells us about his vision of the chariot-throne of Yahweh, borne along by the living creatures. The vision reaches its climax when Ezekiel looks above them and sees “the likeness of a throne,” and seated upon that throne was “a likeness with a human appearance” (Ezekiel 1:26). On God’s throne, Ezekiel sees a human-like figure. Then he concludes, “Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD” (1:28).
The younger man in our conversation is John, recording the words Jesus spoke to the Jews. Jesus said, “Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.” They mockingly replied, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am” (John 8:56–58).
They understood what Jesus was claiming. That’s why they picked up stones to throw at him.
The one Ezekiel saw enthroned in divine glory, with the likeness of a human appearance, is the Son of God. John tells us that this eternal Word truly became human. He “became flesh and dwelt among us,” and John adds, “we have seen his glory” (John 1:14).
Ezekiel saw the likeness of the glory of the LORD with a human appearance. John tells us that this divine Son became flesh and showed us the glory of God in human form.
From all eternity, the Son, with the Father and the Spirit, is the great I AM. He came down from heaven, assumed our human nature, was crucified, died, was buried, and rose again. And he has taken our humanity to the very throne of God, where he reigns forever as the enthroned GodMan.
Jesus is Yahweh. Praise be to him!
