If an Indian company offers shitty service and a foreign competitor enters the market with something significantly better, would you still choose the Indian company just to prove your patriotism and love for your country?
Where do you draw the line?
India has an obsession with affordability.
And I think it’s coming at the cost of innovation.
Every company wants to make things cheaper. Every startup wants to be affordable. Every ambitious product idea eventually faces the same question: “But will Indians pay for it?”
I get it. India is a country where a huge part of the population still struggles to afford even basic necessities. Affordability matters. A lot.
But somewhere along the way, we’ve started treating anything expensive as a problem. Even when the higher price means better quality, better design, or something genuinely innovative.
There is an entire generation of creators, professionals, and enthusiasts in India who are willing to pay good money for exceptional products and services.
But very few companies seem interested in building for them.
Because everyone is too busy figuring out how to make things cheaper instead of figuring out how to make things better.
Affordability is important. But it shouldn’t be the only thing we innovate for.
Not everything needs to be affordable. Some things just need to be exceptional.
