While reading Lovecraft and M.R. James, I realized I needed more of the context of the epoch of their writing. So I will recollect some images to help us go through the stories; I'll use #WeirdFictionCompanion at the start of the tread

"The Whisperer in Darkness" by H.P. Lovecraft
🧵
The story is set in New England between 1927-1928, a northeastern region of the United States comprising the states of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

Unironically yes
Ones that updated have both good engineering teams and these teams/engineers have autonomy and initiative to do the right thing for the business
Companies not updated are prob run top-down and CEO with Duo just instructing them to fix it…

So this is what “alien intelligence” looks like - stuff where a tool us humans created does stuff us humans cannot understand anymore (but can verify)
Reminds me of neural networks where the layout made no sense to humans but it… worked in ways we couldn’t understand fully
We asked GPT-6 Astra to edit Qwen3.5-0.8B weights to improve math.
It directly changed only 0.016% of weights, fixing 0.8B's reasoning loops & improving math up to 6x and even instruction following 3x, without gradients or training.
We call this Weight-Space Programming: frontier LLMs can now natively read/write neural network weights! 🧵
Blog: rikiyat.github.io/blog/weigh…
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
LLM was given weights explicitly as text in prompt and used code/forward passes (per authors' logs) to ablate Qwen looping direction, a known thinking-mode issue per model card. Primarily fixed repetition in that mode, not general 'natively' improving weights/math.

A surprise to no one: Meta’s AI has no guardrails.
In a completely unsurprising turn of events, Meta's Muse AI is stealing Apple Messages, past and present, and uploading the contents to its cloud, even if explicitly told not to. By @Amber_M_Neely

I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier. This has been a primary topic of discussions we've had at OpenAI in recent weeks.
Committing to having independent evaluators with employee-like access is a great idea, and we will do the same. We'll have more to share soon.
We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so.
Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training.

Ahora, redes sociales, AMZ, vehiculos inteligentes y demás si.

AI is probably the biggest prisoner’s dilemma we’ve ever created. Everyone knows slowing down might be safer. But if OpenAI slows down and Anthropic doesn’t, OpenAI loses. If the US slows down and China doesn’t, the US loses. So nobody slows down.
That’s what makes this so insane. You don’t need some evil person trying to destroy the world. You just need a bunch of people making the rational decision for themselves over and over until collectively we’ve raced somewhere none of us actually wanted to go.
It’s a race to zero. Zero cost of intelligence. Zero time between thinking and doing. Maybe eventually zero need for us at all.
