Liability has always been a bogeyman for tech. Originally for social media, and now for AI. However, it’s the best way to balance the cost and benefits of AI—after all, all you’re asking is for payment related to actual damages caused. weightythoughts.com/p/when-a…

Is the current AI freakout about safety different? Maybe, though I still think the news cycle will move on. We’re also more likely to get bad regulation than good regulation. weightythoughts.com/p/what-d…

I've got a small stack of signed hardcovers of What You Need to Know About AI available on Amazon Prime right now—buy from the seller "WeightyThoughts" and yours comes signed by me, with a matching gold bookmark. It's a limited run, so once they're gone, they're gone.

AI is bad at writing long form that is pleasing to read. Most of the discourse that hates on AI writing hates it… because it’s AI. But there really is something there—and it’s not em dashes weightythoughts.com/p/why-is…

Had a great conversation with @paul_podolsky about the culture of AI and what it can or can’t do. If you aren’t familiar, Paul is a colleague of mine from Bridgewater, a great hedge fund manager (who thinks very differently than most), and runs Kate Capital. paulpodolsky.substack.com/p/…

Even Mythos-level AI agents make a lot of pretty dumb errors in complex tasks with lots of steps. This is the trick that I’ve shared with a lot of friends that stomps out most of them—saving a lot of your own human time. weightythoughts.com/p/stop-w…

I’ve been playing with electronic music, even as I’ve been brushing up on “analog” music like piano. It reminds me of AI. Every producer needs to learn drum beats, melodics... everything. Because that one person is the entire orchestra. Imagine how alarming that was to a drummer. Reduced to a soulless loop. Of course, great drumming is, if anything, more valuable now. A sample isn’t the same. For certain genres, you don’t need human drummers—but those wouldn’t exist w/o electronic music.

Anthropic just pushed back Fable being pulled from subscription. Again. This Anthropic Fable vs ChatGPT 5.6 Sol is exactly what we need. Competition that boxes in AI companies from gating capabilities and profit maximizing. (Obviously open-weight models like GLM 5.2, upcoming Qwen Maxes and the non-preview DeepSeek v4 Pro are in this dynamic too.)

Reflecting upon the US’s superpower for its 250th birthday—creative destruction. None of its top 10 companies existed before 1975 (Microsoft). It needs to keep that trend going with AI companies too. weightythoughts.com/p/americ…

How do you incorporate proprietary knowledge to get “hedge fund level” markets analysis, competent medical literature review, or AI agents that can actually use your organization's "deep knowledge"? I created a pattern called "knowledge agents." weightythoughts.com/p/knowle…

Wow, I guess I can call myself a multi-award winning author now! Honored that What You Need to Know About AI has been named a 2026 International Book Awards winner in two categories: Best New Nonfiction and Science—and a finalist in three more (Business: General, Business: Technology, Nonfiction: General).

Honored to have spoken at the Sonoma Valley Authors Festival @svauthorsfest this spring, alongside writers I genuinely admire—several of them Pulitzer winners. My talk is now online through their virtual festival, free to watch until June 22. Worth it for the full lineup alone: svauthorsfest.org/authors/ja…

Most people think hardware is what's driving LLM costs down by 70-90% per year. They're wrong. It's largely software. We can now run frontier-like models on consumer hardware—which is important, given Anthropic's crackdown on agentic use of its subscription. weightythoughts.com/p/ais-pl…
