A major step towards organ cryopreservation! 🧊 A new preprint reports functional recovery of human-scale pig kidneys after vitrification and storage at −150°C for up to a year. The kidneys showed vascular, metabolic and excretory function, and produced urine after transplantation. Huge progress towards making organ banking (and ultimately human biostasis) a reality! 🚀

PREDICTION: Decentralized Science (DeSci) is going to break the stranglehold on credit assignment, how fast we are allowed to go, and who lives and dies in the research community. @ResearchHub $RSC
Feel free to give up on heroic and romantic mathematics, Sir. We don’t know each other, but I have admired your work. Yet I offer an alternate interpretation, respectfully. We have simply forgotten what it is like to live among true giants. True heroes. von Neumann, Einstein, Grothendieck, Weyl, Turing, Gödel, Cartan, Shannon, Weil, Kolmogorov, Serre, Gelfand, Feynman, Dyson, Chern, Leray, Kodaira, Milnor, Atiyah, Singer, Thom, Bott, Borel, Harish-Chandra, Wiener, Courant, Pontryagin, Bohr, Heisenberg, Dirac, Schrödinger, Fermi, Pauli, Landau, Schwinger, Tomonaga, Yang, Oppenheimer, Wigner, Wheeler, Bethe, Bose, de Broglie, Yukawa, Gell-Mann, Salam, Weinberg, Dyson, Chandrasekhar etc., etc. were all alive on New Years Day 1954. That’s not nostalgia. That is how far we have fallen in this preposterous era you have celebrated. This is absolutely categorically *NOT* the romantic era of individual heroism. This has been the era of mostly modest, professional, institutional incrementalism…with an occasional Grisha Perelman or Witten. PREDICTION: AI is going to break this stranglehold that our leadership has had on credit assignment, how fast we are allowed to go, and who lives and dies within this community. And you are absolutely free to take the other side of that. But you might stop trying to speak as the leader of mathematics and mathematicians who do not agree with many of your mysterious recent statements. Respectfully.

When China figures out how to manufacture a product, their ability to scale is often greater than the rest of the world combined. We saw this with lithium batteries and solar, for example. SpaceX is a rare counter-example, where its mass to orbit is roughly an order of magnitude greater than the rest of the world, BUT China now does a majority of non-SpaceX mass to orbit. SpaceX is an anomaly in the matrix. Maybe RAM will be different, but RAM was a low margin commodity only ~3 years ago. LP5 and LP6 are designed to a common standard that China seems to be solving fast. Newer HBM architectures and things like an SRAM layer below logic and 3D stacking RAM on top of logic while finding a way to keep the logic cooled will be harder to solve.

A thought provoking post by @Inria scientist Pierre Marion on the future of research in the age of AI. LLMs can potentially explore the space of possibilities 10x or 100x faster than humans could. If automation shifts the bottleneck towards judgment, taste and verification, how can decentralized science platforms like @ResearchHub $RSC incentivize human researchers for these imperatives? pierremarion23.github.io/tho…

Exactly one year ago today, Bitcoin hit an ATH of $126,080. Today, the year-long downtrend is over and the bull market is back—all while fiscal crises unfold from the U.S. to France. As printable fiat systems fracture under debt, Bitcoin stands firm as unprintable honest money. In a few months, the entire correction will look like a blip on the chart.

In the last cycle, AI was a headwind for crypto as it diverted capital. This cycle, it's a powerful tailwind. With the rise of the machine-native economy, digital assets will serve as the foundational money for AI. See the latest research by @BlackRock 👇
Our latest research paper explores the growing connection between AI and digital assets and explains why broad AI adoption may drive new demand, utility and applications across the digital asset economy. blackrock.com/us/individual/…

The next wave of growth for the $1T health science market is moving on-chain. And the next wave of on-chain growth is happening on @ResearchHub $RSC
The $1T+ health science market, and here's who's actually producing it: Asia: 37.5% US + Canada: 37.2% Europe: 23.8% Everyone else: 1.5% We want the next chunk of growth to happen onchain.

History does not repeat, but it rhymes. In 1946, the Anglo-American Loan Agreement dismantled the British Empire's economic infrastructure. By forcing sterling convertibility, the US shattered imperial trade monopolies and broke the Sterling Area. The decades that unfolded saw the emergence of an American-biased global commerce system and dollar supremacy. Now, the rhyme repeats. 80 years on, the US faces its own imperial overstretch and economic strain. While there is no next sovereign superpower waiting in the wings, the 2008 Bitcoin whitepaper quietly kick-started a speculative attack on fiat currencies—and the eventual dismantling of dollar supremacy. In the decades to come, we will see the emergence of a global commerce system that is decentralized, open, and self-sovereign.

So you’re telling me raising rates to fight inflation is actually inflationary because we’re inflating the financial assets and lifestyle of rentiers who get paid more in interests. Brilliant.

1/3 Conscious AI and Biological Naturalism. A veeery loooong time in the making, but I'm happy to say that the full collection is now out in @BBSJournal 🔥 I deeply thank all commentators - of fifty commentaries! - for their wise, broad, and deep opinions on this critical topic. I also thank them for their saintly patience. 🙏🏽 I remain highly skeptical about the prospects for conscious AI (for silicon digital systems), but I've learned an enormous amount from the privilege of engaging with these commentaries. Hands down one of the most rewarding experiences of my professional life. My hope is that - whether you agree with me or not - having such a diversity of views collected in one place will serve a useful resource for discussions about consciousness and AI. The original target article is available here: cambridge.org/core/journals/… My response "The stuff matters: consciousness, computation, and biology" was published just now, and is here: cambridge.org/core/journals/… And the set of 50 commentaries are collected here: cambridge.org/core/journals/… Unfortunately these are not open access. I will try to remedy that, at least for the target & response. FWIW there's a more accessible version of my view on the topic here in @NoemaMag noemamag.com/the-mythology-o… and also a short @TEDTalks from earlier this year ted.com/talks/anil_seth_why_…

Thots on the Fed hike: Hiking with elevated levels of govt debt it is stimulative. Banks get paid more on their reserves, and rentiers get paid more on their T-bills. The net effect is more consumption, especially of financial assets. Even though the Fed stopped RMP purchases in mid-Aug, if you add the banking balance sheet growth, the total of Fed + Banks' assets are growing which creates money. The net effect is an increase of the quantity of money even as its price increases. This is why financial assets will continue to rise.

For Buffalo Bill Bessent "The House" to truly freak out and slam the brr button, in addition to 5% on 10yr we need MOVE Index >130 just like in late 2023 when Bad Gurl Yellen started draining the RRP.

Tim Draper: The next decade will belong to those willing to fund and run experiments outside the narrow channels that dominated the last fifty years. @ResearchHub $RSC
I have a t-shirt that says Decentralize Everything. That is 40 years of observation compressed into two words, and I finally wrote the argument down as the first guest contributor to @CryptoniteRap. The piece is about DeSci, decentralized science. Every institution stagnates the same way. A small group ends up controlling the agenda, that group gets invested in the current framework, and challenging the consensus becomes a career risk. I have watched it in banking, telecom, rocketry, and now science. After 40 years I boiled it down to two rules. 1- The Draper Equation: the likelihood that a society needs to rethink an industry is proportional to the number of people benefiting from existing theories without change. 2- The Draper Corollary: the more centralized the decision-making, the less innovation occurs. The more decentralized the operations, the more innovation occurs and the faster that sector grows. The consensus mocked Hotmail, Skype, Tesla, Bitcoin, and SpaceX too. Every time, mockery was an excellent signal. Read the full editorial: cryptoniteventures.substack.…
