Cannabis was introduced in SA as early as the 1600s by Arabs and Indians. In fact, SA is one of the only African countries where drugs are consumed culturally for enjoyment (they have special pipes built for males and females - longer ones for females to avoid lung damage).

But we all know this is how propaganda works. Keep pointing fingers at a particular group while completely disregarding the facts; in this case, SA has always been a hub for drugs and the drug trade in general.

That being said, illegal immigration should be called out and punished accordingly, but acting oblivious to the truth in front of you does not help anyone.

I'm beginning to understand that crime is a highly political topic. The reputation of Nigeria does not in any way match the data. We're not even in the "big leagues" when it comes to fraud.
All the scams that has happened in Nigeria in the last 10 years isn’t up to $3.7 BILLION. Stop thinking Nigerians lose VISA access because of issues like fraud or terrible press, the biggest reason is because we have a very low negotiating power as a country and our leaders are not doing their job.

I think the West needs to take more responsibility for dysfunctional African countries, which they mostly created. In many cases, it still doesn't make sense why some countries are composed the way they are. The worst roads in Nigeria, for instance, were created by the British.

The way blacks get profiled in Germany, you'd think they are the ones who commit the most crimes. The data actually tells a different story.

Can we please stop encouraging Nigerians to study in the US? 🙄
If you are a Nigerian student with strong academic ability and wish to study in the US on a full scholarship, register now: ng.usembassy.gov/educationus… Children in privileged private schools have enjoyed this for years. It’s open to any child from any school regardless of your family background. It closes in 9 days.

Nigeria's isolation from its neighbours on a linguistic basis was extremely strategic. The long-term effects of being disconnected from the countries most culturally similar to us are tremendous.

Cameroon is a tricky one because they actually speak both languages. So this also affects how Nigeria relates to Cameroon and how they, in turn, relate to their neighbours. I'm not a local, so I don't know too much about how internal politics works.

Top military strategy, I must say. The effects are still very much visible today: how language has shaped perception, relations and even local politics.

Unstable electricity is perhaps one of the biggest factors driving emigration out of Nigeria. Might not necessarily be the main reason, but it's definitely connected somehow.

Instead of doomscrolling all day, spend your day learning end-to-end Nigerian History from the 9000s to date. The Sokoto Caliphate is not the earliest documented existence of Nigeria, nor is the Oyo Empire. Spend your day here: 1000reasons.vote/hall-of-fam…

Media Framing of Crime Along Ethnic Lines: Divisive. As an Igbo man, I have endured stereotypes, judgment, and labelling solely based on my ethnic origins. This is not an isolated Igbo experience. Most Nigerians have, at some point, been reduced to their ethnicity rather than recognised for their true character. I understand the pain of the ordinary Fulani man today, often unfairly judged by the actions of criminals he does not support, has never met, and who are not representative of his people. Even in America, such unjust labelling fueled the civil rights movement and prompted Martin Luther King Jr. to declare that people should be judged by the content of their character, not the colour of their skin. Every Nigerian ethnic group is known for its unique traditions, occupations, skills, and strengths. Crime, however, has no ethnicity. A thief is a thief. A terrorist is a terrorist. A kidnapper is a kidnapper. They are bad actors, not representatives of any people. They must be identified, arrested, and punished according to the law. We must decisively abandon the dangerous practice of blaming entire ethnic groups for the actions of a few criminals. It is unjust, it breeds hatred, and it damages our national unity. Let us proudly celebrate our diverse cultures, talents, and contributions, rather than falling prey to stereotypes and prejudices that politicians and divisive interests exploit for their gain. A new Nigeria must emerge—one where no citizen is condemned because of tribe, religion, or birthplace. We can cherish our cultural roots while standing united by justice, mutual respect, and hope for a better future. We are capable of this. A new Nigeria is within our reach. -PO

Energy access is largely a money problem, not a technology problem, and so the solutions will need to be financial solutions.

We have all watched the brazen manipulation in the Nigerian Senate in full glare and we are still having intellectual discussions about electoral reforms.

Africans complaining about "exposing" something we all knew was not real in the first place is wild to me. It just means the "magic" was not that great in the first place. This is 2026. We can't all accept being stupid.

Politics in Nigeria is less about facts or data, and more about narratives. Data on it's own never paints the full picture which is where narratives come in, to help achieve the desired messaging .
