Hospitals save lives — but they’re also huge polluters. I wrote for @BloombergGreen about Dr Forbes McGain, the Melbourne doctor pushing to break medicine’s addiction to single-use plastics & other sources of medical waste. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Could we improve kidney care by rethinking who gets referred to a nephrologist?
Our latest study from the SCREAM cohort suggests: yes — if we base it on predicted risk rather than fixed eGFR/ACR cutoffs.
📄 Caldinelli et al, 2025, @NDTsocial

The @youngANZSN session:-
✨updates on the new @TheRACP curriculum
🏋️♀️reflections on the challenges of training
📝launch of the wellbeing survey
🥰thriving in our workplaces- individual, unit and organisational responses
#DNT2025
Kidney Supportive Care had a big platform @ANZSN:-
🚶measure and respond to frailty
😶🌫️post dialysis fatigue leaves patients with very few ‘good’ days
⏰time toxicity of dialysis
🫘more work needed in the exhausted graft
📚@ISNkidneycare has a whole curriculum
#DNT2025
Quality improvement in focus 🔍 :-
🚦moving data reporting away from traffic lights
🌊 responding rather than reacting to variation
🖼️ reframing MnM as a QI opportunity
💫 QI innovation fellowships should become a recognised training pathway
#DNT2025
Fantastic initiatives in the quality improvement showcase:-
🩸 rationalising routine HD path
🗣️ ACP in HD units
💬 communication skils workshops
♻️ green nephrology
💉AVF management
🏥 CKD care coordination
🫘 lived experience measures

Some important take aways and messages from the advocacy session:-
🐄 what are the sacred cows?
🤝 build relationships early
🔊 get involved before an ask
🎈lift your gaze
👭 engage consumers
#DNT2025
And as he was introduced, one of the sexy men in nephrology, @brendonneuen discussed approaches of embedding kidneys in the mind of funders and research in clinical practice. A consistent message in #DNT2025 has been on what can be achieved when we partner with consumers.
Hannah Wallace challenged the status quo of early CKD management with different models of care, working with primary care, utilising nurse practitioners, and technology/telehealth, trying to #MakeKidneysSexy through a community and public health approach.
#DNT2025
I loved the consumer debate which included @scholes_nicki and @KarenDwyer12.
Some reflections:-
🕵🏼♂️consumers as change agents
🪙land on the side of the consumer
🏡consumers in every room, every discussion
💫valuing their expertise
🏁expectations at the outset
#DNT2025
Also heard about the resources available for embedding consumers’ voice in health service design and research as well as the experience of a Kidney Patient Council in the Bay of Plenty #DNT2025
But also a timely reminder, when @KidneyHealth conducted a survey on consumer engagement, not a single head of department in AusNZ responded…
