Beautiful essay on an extremely difficult topic.
.@MaggieSlepian was 13 the first time she restricted her food intake to reclaim power over her life. In her gripping @Longreads essay, she recounts her struggle with anorexia and bulimia, what drove her to seek treatment, and why she remains vigilant.

Here it is: I spent the weekend talking to fired and current employees of the USFS, NPS, and USFWS. The stories they tell—understaffed parks, missing trail crews, qualified firefighters gone—paint a picture of a public lands system reaching a crisis point: backpacker.com/stories/issue…
Folks, @BackpackerMag has a big story coming this morning. Stay tuned 👀

We are on day 3 of the showdown between the White House and the Associated Press: washingtonpost.com/style/med…
“This looks like a test case for the Trump White House to see what they can get away with,” @Acosta told me. “And to me, it seems that news organizations should be getting behind the Associated Press sooner rather than later in order to show a united front."
If you, or someone you know, had a job offer from the NPS, USFS, or other outdoors-facing agency rescinded in the current federal hiring freeze, or if you're an employee whose programs or operations have been impacted by said freeze, I'd like to hear from you. DM for Signal.

BREAKING: Associated Press (@AP) told to “align its editorial standards” — and rename the Gulf of Mexico — or lose Oval Office access.
This unprecedented act of censorship should elicit a harsh, bi-partisan rebuke in defense of America’s free press.

Isabella is a phenomenally talented journalist—skilled at the fundamentals of writing, reporting, promoting, and dealing with people, and thoughtful about the way her work intersects with the world. I recommend her in the strongest terms.
And the @ADL, which called for his last appointment to be rescinded in 2020, has removed its criticism of him from their website.

Hawaii's Haiku Stairs are controversial—and illegal to hike—on a good day. But two sailors' decision to film themselves throwing a piece of the hike's metal railing off a mountainside has landed them in deep trouble. backpacker.com/news-and-even…
Just saw somebody at @Arapahoe_Basin in a full trans flag ski suit, go off monarch.
I think that the "who is this guy" should be posted at the top of newspaper op-eds, and this case the answer is "a retired ICE official."

Interestingly enough, the US never allowed southbound hikers to cross at the terminus. So part of me wonders if this is a tit-for-tat thing inspired by the new political environment.
