There is life after journalism for @CSAC_Counties board member Ryan Campbell, who worked at newspapers in Stockton, Lodi and Tuolumne County and now serves on the Board of Supervisors:
Wildfire does not stop at a jurisdictional boundary. @TuolumneCountyC Supervisor Ryan Campbell explains why collaboration among counties, public agencies, landowners and residents is essential to protecting lives and property. #CAcounties #WildfirePreparedness

CSAC, @CalCities, @RuralCounties, @CSDAdistricts, and @countiesurban commend @CAgovernor for vetoing AB 1383, which would have rolled back key PEPRA pension reforms and weakened safeguards for the long-term financial health of local communities.

This makes zero sense. The Sacramento Bee’s ownership has decided it doesn’t need a beat reporter for the @SacramentoKings — our region’s only (permanent) major league sports team?!
Some sad personal news: the Sacramento Bee’s three-reporter sports department has been eliminated during McClatchy’s sweeping layoffs, which means my eight-year run is coming to an end. I’m incredibly thankful for time spent with my wonderful colleagues and editors…

Deeply sad to see the @sacbee_news layoffs. These cuts don't just affect the talented, mission-driven journalists who lost their jobs today through no fault of their own. They harm our entire community.

This is actually a huge problem in CA Utilities code. After the rate cases are approved with specific expenses, IOUs have management discretion to redirect those funds. California Burning had examples of this and in rate cases, I've seen it firsthand.

🚨 Attn city leaders: BEWARE of the so-called “Wildfire Victims First” campaign. Backed by utility companies, the campaign is pushing a bailout that could leave survivors and local governments footing the bill for wildfire damages caused by those same utilities. Paradise Vice Mayor Steve “Woody” Culleton told @politico he was misled by the campaign. subscriber.politicopro.com/a…

“Sure, it’s my fault, but you’re gonna pay for it. Suckers!”
Investor-owned utilities want special treatment: limit what they pay for wildfires they cause and leave communities with the rest. Meanwhile, billions go to shareholders. California shouldn’t protect IOU profits at the expense of taxpayers and wildfire survivors.

🚨CSAC's Board of Directors voted unanimously today to express deep disapproval of PG&E's manipulation of wildfire survivors and local elected officials for political and financial gain. The Board calls on the IOUs to immediately cancel all ads and shut this "coalition" down.
Scoop: Paradise vice mayor says he was "duped" and "conned" into appearing in a TV ad paid for by the 'Wildfire Victims First Coalition' The group is funded by PG&E and supports Newsom's proposal that aims to cap fire liability costs for utilities subscriber.politicopro.com/a…

Kids asked me this evening what I was working on, so I tried to explain the wildfire liability debate at the state Capitol to them. I did so the way I used to do as a journalist — laying out both sides fairly and explaining why each side had a point.

They immediately interrupted me. If these investor-owned utilities caused the fires, they said, the utilities should pay for them! The former journalist in me pointed out how complicated this issue is. Started going into the weeds a bit.

They interrupted me again. It’s obvious, they said. It’s what you and Mom teach us every day. If you break it, you buy it. Sometimes, an incredibly complex policy debate is actually so simple. It just takes a 9- and 12-year-old to remind you. -30-

“It’s not a real coalition,” @knaus_counties told @dustingardiner. “It’s one that’s built on deception. It’s a sham.”

It’s basic: The investor-owned utilities proposal throws accountability out the window and pads corporate profits.
First in @politicoca: CSAC is pushing back on a proposal that could let investor-owned utilities off the hook for wildfire costs — and leave survivors, taxpayers and local governments paying the price.

This proposal basically tells private utilities: Hey, don't worry about preventing these catastrophic wildfires. Don't bother investing in safer equipment. Because even if it's your fault, someone else will pay.
