Today we're standing up XBOX LABS (labs.xbox.com). Here is the note that I sent to the team:
Team,
The first video games emerged some 75 years ago. In the time since, there have been booms and busts, but every year there are more great games to play, more devices to play them, and best of all, more people than ever playing. That growth helped make XBOX what it is today, and we've helped shape the industry in return, from bringing hard drives to consoles and online gaming through Xbox Live to Game Pass and cloud gaming, alongside franchises that have brought millions of people together.
In recent weeks, we've seen games rapidly decompiled and rebuilt to run on hardware they were never originally designed to support. Windows PC builds have been translated to run on Apple Silicon or ported to run inside a browser through WebAssembly and WebGPU, the latter now approaching 90% global browser support. Perhaps more surprisingly, we've seen many of the biggest games in the world have been remixed into the source code of another.
These experiments challenge long-held assumptions about our industry: the tether between software and hardware, the boundary between creation and play, and how people discover and experience games. While it is hard to predict the future of gaming, it is easy to see the possibilities in making great games easier to access, giving old games new life and allowing more players to become creators and co-creators. These are unmistakably good outcomes for players, even when (and sometimes because) they challenge our existing business models.
To explore these possibilities, Iโve asked Scott to stand-up XBOX LABS, a small group of game makers, engineers and scientists whose job is to turn emerging ideas into things our players and developers can experience. We'll build in the open, learn from what people do, and measure success by whether more people are playing and creating.
I think XBOX has an important role to play here. Coding became the first major workload for agents because they can write, run, and test software. Games share many of those same properties, and people spend more than 72 billion hours a year playing XBOX games, roughly five times the estimated time spent writing code worldwide. We've spent 25 years learning how to make great games, and I want our game makers to help shape what these new technologies make possible. As we learn, weโll share the tools we build with developers across the industry, just as we always have.
Our priorities aren't changing. We remain committed to the 4Cs, to making great games, to our hardware and to being responsible stewards of IP and the communities built around it. LABS gives us a way to explore new technology that is game design led without abandoning the work already underway.
Asha

Why we believe "Free to Compete" can work where Legends of Runeterra struggled.

Collecting in Origins works different to other digital TCGs, since we have 2 separate card systems:
โข Gameplay cards
โข Collectible cards
They share characters and card designs, but access, ownership, and supply are different.
โธ Gameplay cards:
Every base gameplay card will be available free to every player, every season. These versions are untradeable and exist for play. A player will never need to buy a pack or own a collectible version to build a competitive deck. We call this free-to-compete, and it's our way to prevent pay-to-win from destroying the experience of players.
โธ Collectible cards:
Collectible cards will be separate Steam inventory items that players own and can trade. Even the standard collectible version will be visually distinct from the gameplay card, using a different frame and card view to make the illustration stand out more.
The collector system is scheduled to launch after Steam Next Fest and has a few key traits:
- Sealed product
- Limited sets
- Deep rarity
- Digital grading
- Tournament cards
Let's dive into each:
1. Sealed products
Packs, booster boxes, and cases will exist as separate items. A collector will be able to open them, trade them, or keep them sealed. Booster boxes and cases will only be offered through preorder, so Origins will not continue adding new sealed units after that window closes.
2. Set availability
Standard collectible sets will have a 3-month sale period. The Alpha Edition will be available only through Kickstarter. When the period ends, Origins will stop supplying that edition. Cards and sealed products available afterward will come from existing owners through the Steam Community Market.
3. Rarity and treatments
Collector packs can contain standard collectible cards, alternate-art variants, animated Storybook cards, and digital error cards. This creates a lot of depth for our ecosystem and makes collecting exciting.
4. Automatic grading
Every collectible card will be graded automatically when it is opened.
Weโre exploring a digital grading system where multiple parameters contribute to a cardโs overall grade. These characteristics could vary in appearance and severity from card to card, including digital โdefectsโ that give each card its own distinct condition.
Grades will run from 1 to 10, including half grades. A card's grade is separate from its card rarity and art treatment, creating another way for individual copies to differ. Low grades can be collectible for the same reason high grades are: they represent a more specific version of a limited object.
5. Tournament cards
Some collectible cards will never appear in packs or stores, including ultra rare tournament promos. They will only be earned through competition.
For example the winner of our upcoming Crimson Cup will win a special 1/1 Dracula Promo card. They will be the only person owning that card, forever.
6. How the two systems stay separate
Collectible scarcity applies to editions, art treatments, grades, sealed products, and tournament provenance. It will never limit access to the competitive card pool.
Every base gameplay card will remain free so you can always be a competitive player even if you spent $0. Packs are optional.
I have been a big enthusiast for card games for a long time
It started off with Yu Gi Oh as a kid, dueling against others on the playground
Then it got reiginted when Hearthstone came out
There hasn't been a card game that has got me just as excited until @origins_tcg

This man is a hero.
Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian captain of flydubai Flight 1073, fought back after being stabbed in the cockpit.
Despite being severely injured, he managed to unlock the cockpit door - allowing Israeli passengers and the Emirati crew to intervene and save all the passengers.
Together, their extraordinary courage saved 174 lives.
Indian. Israeli. Emirati.
Different nationalities. One extraordinary act of courage. ๐ฎ๐ณ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ช
We wish Captain Machchhar a full and speedy recovery.
Digital TCGs have been missing this feeling of collectability which @origins_tcg is fixing and you need to deep dive into the ecosystem.
Limited packs and sealed products, 1/1 tournament promos, Digital Grading (fr), God Packs, Error Cards, everything you can find in the physical world that people know and love has been custom made for Digital format here.
Errors card have unique glitches, grading is also not just rounded edges or print mistakes but actual digital enhancements or phase outs, join the discord to discuss on these and decide if itโs for you โ
How do Origins TCG sets work?
As you know we're taking a lot of inspiration from other games for our economy. For set releases it's first and foremost physical TCGs.
- Sealed product
- Limited print runs
- Defined release periods
- LGS
Here's the details:
1. The Alpha Edition
The first Origins set is Myths and Legends, containing 218 characters. Its first-edition collectible release is Alpha Edition.
Alpha Edition will only be available through the Kickstarter. Every Alpha card will carry an Alpha tag on the card face so the edition remains identifiable forever. A character may appear again in a later set, but the Alpha Edition version and its Alpha tag will not.
Once the Alpha window closes, Origins will not issue additional Alpha cards, packs, booster boxes, or cases.
2. The collectible set cycle
Origins plans to release a new set every 3 to 4 months. Standard sets will have a 3-month sale window during which collectible cards and sealed products will be distributed through Origins, participating local game stores, and approved online partners.
Afterward, the only available copies will be the cards, packs, booster boxes, and cases already owned by collectors. Those items can be traded through the Steam Community Market.
3. Sealed supply
Packs, booster boxes, and cases will exist as individual Steam inventory items. Collectors can open them, trade them, or leave them sealed. Booster boxes and cases will only be available through preorder.
This allows sealed product to remain part of the collection instead of becoming a temporary purchase screen that disappears after opening.
4. What limited supply does and does not mean
Limited supply creates verifiable scarcity. It does not guarantee demand, market value, or price appreciation. All of these will be determined by collectors on the secondary market.
The limited supply also applies only to collectible versions. Every base gameplay card will remain free to every player, so an edition closing will never remove a card from the game.
5. How rarity is created
A collectible card can differ across several layers:
- Edition
- Rarity
- Grade
- Digital condition
- Promo status
These layers give our cards a lot of depth and allows us to make a particular collectible more specific without changing what the card does in a match.
6. How grading works
The contents of a sealed pack are determined before the pack is opened. When a collectible card is revealed, the system rolls its grade.
Grading is automatic, instant, and free. The card is evaluated across centering, corners, edges, and surface, with visible digital defects explaining the result. Grades range from 1 to 10, including half grades.
Because grade and card rarity are separate, two copies of the same card and art treatment can still be meaningfully different collectibles.
This is our approach to set releases. If you want to learn more join our community and make sure to try our demo on Steam!
