32 years ago today.
Russell Simmons passed on Nas’ demo, famously claiming that Nas sounded too much like G Rap. translation: great but unsalable. he signed Warren G instead. Illmatic dropped, and is widely regarded as the greatest rap album ever made.
Illmatic was the bridge. Melle Mel and Kurtis Blow, to Run-DMC, to Rakim, the Juice Crew, and Big Daddy Kane. now Nas. everyone said he had next since Large Professor brought the chipped tooth kid sporting Gazelles into the studio.
the more you listen to Illmatic, the more haunted it feels. when you’re younger, it clubs you with its hail of words and the skeletal beauty of its beats. but the older I get, the more it strikes me as a teenaged requiem for those still living. “Old Soul” is the sort of stock phrase used by yoga teachers and amateur psychics, but it always fit Nas. he’s 20 and prematurely nostalgic, struck by memories of park jams and watching “CHiPS.”, when Shante dissed the real Roxanne, and how much he misses Mr. Magic.
Illmatic is a story of a gifted writer born into squalor, trying to claw his way out of the projects. It’s somewhere between The Basketball Diaries and Native Son, but Jim Carroll and Richard Wright couldn’t rap like Nas. not many can.
39 minutes and 51 seconds of perfection.
The nice thing about wood heat is that you get 7x the heat!! 1 - felling the tree 2 - cutting into logs 3 & 4 - splitting the logs 5 - hauling the splits 6 - stacking just nice 7 - making a fire 🔥 ery time I get close to that wood pile I get a sweat going!! Nothing better than coffee over a fire as the forest wakes up.
Country music’s biggest night was so fun!! It was so nice to see everyone dressed up so lovely and having a good time. Congratulations to all of the nominees and award winners, on the split sheets and behind the scenes making it happen, and on the long hard ride to Nashville. “Three chords and truth” has a special place in my heart, having grown up in North Carolina and country music being one of the sound tracks of life. Bravo to Stephen Wilson Jr. for an absolutely incredible performance of Stand By Me…standing ovation was well deserved. Many thanks again to Chuck McDowell & Jo Ellen Drennon McDowell for having us.
Behold! The time has come. Zoe picked up a few new ornaments (computer and tractor for me and bejazzled bug for her) and stockings for Ripley and Fezzik. We also like to collect holiday decorations of all stripes when we travel so it’s fun to pull them back out and laugh through of acquisition of each 🎄🎄🎄
It’s my favorite to wake up to a cool misty fall forest. The heavy rain cleaned everything last night and colors smell just right. A day late super moon shines on as the woods awaken.
A big red oak tree fell late last year deep in the forest. We were able to cut it and drag the logs to where I could get them on the trailer. Of course, I got 4 of the 5 on the trailer ok but on the final lift my skid decided to rest..I think I blew a hose or a valve for the boom and grapple to lift/tilt up. And this trailer is what I’d use to take the skid into to see the doctor…but theyll have to make a house call. Thankfully it’s on a level and easily accessible area to repair.
These logs will be milled and will have to sit for a year or two to dry..should be a fair amount of lumber once it’s all done.
With potential SNAP benefits reduction during the holidays..Here’s info I found this morning on Nashville Food Banks and their pick up times for families in need of food, clothes, or diapers:

On this day in 1969, Bob Moog received U.S. Patent 3,475,623 for his voltage-controlled low-pass filter, the circuit that gave Moog synthesizers their unmistakable warmth and movement.
🎛️ Known as the ladder filter, this design used the base-to-emitter diode resistance of transistors to create a smooth, resonant cutoff that could be shaped with voltage, a breakthrough that made the filter playable like an instrument itself.
From the Minimoog to modern modulars, this innovation defined the sound of analog synthesis and still influences electronic music and sound design more than fifty years later. ❤️

I totally got the better end of this deal! Zoe and I came down to Puerto Rico for a few days to celebrate 48 turns about the sun. No plans really..apart from reading a couple books and eating ceviche and a scoot about old San Juan. I find it really interesting to travel these days, post long periods on the farm, where it’s very quiet and secluded. Being in the city, even on an island, is fun for the sounds and languages and accents and music. We found this underwater park this afternoon as the sun set. Grateful and excited for life and family and friends and work and all kinds of interesting projects.
Finally hung the door..the angle of the door had me doimg some funky stuff with the hinges..total brain warp to not have it scrape the floor when opened..still some trim to tack on..and built a model for the dormer that’ll get worked out with 2”x4” then sheathing and shingles.
I’ll be shoveling snow to get the shingles on at this pace, but the key is steady progress.
The year was 2005 and a group of men from across the globe converged at Santa Monica Rugby Football Club to win the National Championship. We would do it again the following year in 2006. Each of us had been a standout to one degree or another at our previous clubs, but upon finding each other, magic would ensue..i know for me, playing with other guys that were so good forced me to elevate my own game and maybe there is a circular influence that conspired to influence us to raise the level as a group. Of course, we liked to run and hit and ruck and support and take care of each other.. we’d trained hard in the preseason and went full contact at practice..ran hills and did burpees at the end..it was hard on purpose..fundamentals again and again and again ..passes were sympathetic and we over communicated...line outs and scrum plays whilst the backs ran kilometer after kilometer about the pitch ..round and round and round and two on 1 and switches and dummies and then all over again. Unopposed for longer than we cared to and then full on…metal becomes harder the more you hit it…and a healthy dose of good luck and the rugby gods making sure the ball bounced our way…it all fostered the chemistry between us..and trust..a brotherhood formed that will remain intact for this lifetime and the next.
So many to thank that worked to make those seasons so special. Ever grateful 🙏🏼
It doesnt seem like it’s been 20 years.
