📢 New paper out! What happens to bilingual language control when our attention is divided? Our results suggest that cognitive load doesn’t simply make control worse—it changes how bilinguals manage their languages. Open access 🔓 link.springer.com/article/10… 👇🧵

⚡ When they could choose the language themselves, they adapted differently: they used the L2 when it was readily available, but fell back on the L1 when it was not. In short: ➡️ No choice = prepare in advance ➡️ Choice = adapt on the fly

🎯 Why does this matter? Bilingual language control is an adaptive system, but we still know relatively little about what shapes that adaptation. Here, cognitive load changed not simply how much control speakers had, but how they used it.

By identifying which cultural dimension drives variation in emotion semantics, we move beyond reporting that culture matters to begin explaining how. We see this as a first step toward linking cross-cultural semantics with the sociocognitive systems that structure human emotion🙂
