Save time, bandwidth and disk usage while cloning a #Git repo by running a partial clone. It fetches entire commit history but avoids downloading file patches for entire history until checked out. git clone --filter=blob:none <url> #git #github #gitlab #gitea #codeberg

I replaced a shell script today with AWK and sqlite. The result is easier to maintain and 141 times (sic!) faster than the code it replaced. SQLite is grossly undervalued for typical scripting tasks. AWK the data into a table and .import - solves a lot of problems.

So when we send electricity through a pickle, the electrons in the sodium atoms get excited and we get that familiar yellow light. This thread was brought to you by #PickleDay, or Any Excuse Is A Good Excuse To Destroy Something In Our Lab Day.

If anything I learned working creating a user account using a pattern, you will always offend someone. Often username conventions occur in an inappropriate, unfortunate, insulting, racist, sexist, and whatnot. Many times software in question does not allow such stuff.

As I mentioned in stackoverflow.com/a/58003889… with public-inbox.org/git/VI1PR01…: the "new" (Git 2.23+ , Q3 2019) and still experimental commands "git restore" and "git switch" are here to stay. xitter.cf/adeekshith/status/1421…

The best kind of bug report is when the reporter threatens to give up using your open source product if you don't hurry up to fix it. In your spare time. For their benefit. </sarcasm>

Shell scripts run in their own subshell, so a cd in a script only effects the subshell. To script a cd, use an alias instead.

It turns out there is. Watomatic is a free/open source "autoresponder" utility for Whatsapp and Facebook that automatically replies to messages with instructions for reaching you on a rival service. play.google.com/store/apps/d… 38/

I need to process a 169,283-line tax-related CSV published by the state of Washington. I can do it in 0.486 s at my shell. Or I can load it into Numbers, which takes multiple minutes to copy one column to the clipboard. No idea how non-programmers get anything done on computers.

Personally, I like @NextDNS, and it is indeed a solid DNS service. Here's something that I wrote for @MUO_official to let more people know about it: makeuseof.com/control-securi… #Security #Privacy

Amazing concept, wonderfully executed by @watomatic, created by @adeekshith. An important step towards breaking away from the Facebook ecosystem.

May 15th is #DeleteWhatsAppDay. Their new privacy policy makes the app unsuitable to those who require privacy and security. We've teamed up with @Watomatic to help you leave WhatsApp for good. You can use Watomatic's auto-reply function to help people find you on Session.
