A few years ago, I was going through a hard time. I reached out to an unlikely figure for help. Here, in @NewYorker, are my Letters to Jeb newyorker.com/culture/person…
I loved You Can See Everything - it takes what is already unique about Fielder's work and adds in elements from F is for Fake and Godard (I kept thinking about the opening of Tout Va Bien). The result feels extremely of the moment, in every sense.
I reviewed Tom McCarthy's latest, THE RHYL POSTER, for @nytimesbooks - it's a highly enjoyable interpretation of the legal thriller using McCarthy's signature cartography. nytimes.com/2026/10/09/books…
When the sun appeared as a blinding bead on the ring’s side, the eclipse was over. The black lens cover appeared again, back-lighted, and slid away. At once the yellow light made the sky blue again; the black lid dissolved and vanished. The real world began there. - Annie Dillard
A pleasure to interview RF Kuang about her new novel TAIPEI STORY, which made me extremely nostalgic and grateful that I am no longer a teenager: lithub.com/learning-from-sha…

I’ve loved the Knicks since I was 6 years old - Ewing and Starks, Sprewell and Houston, so many years of waiting and hoping and losing. I didn’t think it would ever happen. Basketball is my favorite art form and this beautiful team perfected it.

"In my strange absence of flavor, their glossy enthusiasm was captivating. I suspect that I was outsourcing my own eating." Thrilled to copublish @adalva's essay on "Ozempic full," YouTube mukbang rabbit holes, and beating the buffet, with the good folks at Cake Zine. longreads.com/2026/04/29/oze…
Thanks to my friends at Cake Zine and @Longreads for letting me write about Ozempic, YouTube shorts, and Fogo de Chao: longreads.com/2026/04/29/oze…
Honored to share that the Board of the National Book Critics Circle has elected me to once again serve as President this year - it's a spectacular group of critics, and I'm excited to continue the work.
Congratulations to all the winners of our 2025 National Book Critics Circle Awards! On a personal note, serving as NBCC President this year was a tremendous honor - terrific books, and a terrific board.
A total pleasure to re-read and write about one of my very favorite novels, Robert Coover’s UNIVERSAL BASEBALL ASSOCIATION INC. for the New York Times, recently reissued by @nyrbclassics. A captivating, prescient book! nytimes.com/2026/03/25/books…

Difficult but necessary to report that an undergraduate student of mine recently and earnestly called Vampire Weekend "dad rock"
Our NBCC shortlists are here! They are the product of a year of careful reading and debate, culminating in an intense all-day meeting last weekend. I can't wait to celebrate these wonderful books at our awards ceremony at the New School on 3/26. Join us! lithub.com/here-are-this-yea…
This fall, I had the pleasure of re-reading Karl Ove Knausgaard’s work for the New York Times. I’m grateful for the assignment, the brilliant editing, and Knausgaard, for giving me so much to think about, as always: nytimes.com/article/karl-ove…
I wrote a bit about Edward Yang's Yi Yi in this wonderful @yalereview year-end roundup - a film that I keep thinking about! yalereview.org/article/favor…
