#DontLookAway Trump is a sociopathic narcissist, a wannabe Hitler. He has started an international conflict over which he no longer has any control. In so doing, he has placed all of humanity in danger. My first hope is that the world will survive until November. My second hope is that the American military will not completely bow down to him prior to the November election. If the military caves in, there will be no legitimate election in November; the American experiment in democracy will be dead. During his first term, Donald Trump made the mistake of appointing some people whose primary allegiance was to the Constitution. He has not made the same mistake in his second term; he has appointed people whose only allegiance is to him; they have no regard for the Constitution. If Trump dies as a dictator, his successor will be a dictator, fighting other dictators for world supremacy. If we are able to defeat Trump's lackeys in November in a legitimate election, we will have won the battle but not the war. The years from 1945 to 1968 were in many respects the golden years of American Democracy, years when great strides were made on behalf of African-Americans, women, Native Americans, gay & transgendered individuals and many other groups. It was a time when we aspired to diversity, equity and inclusion. It was hard work, many gave their lives, but hope infused the air. I experienced that hope and optimism which is why it is so very difficult for me to see what I see today. The years from 1968 to 2016 were declining years that birthed the creep of consumerism in the late 60’s and the rise of trickle-down economics in 1980, degenerating into plutocracy which succumbed to a populist rebellion that resulted in the election of Donald Trump as president in 2016. Democrats and Republicans share equally in the damage that was wreaked between 1968 and 2016; Theodore Roosevelt correctly labelled plutocracy as tyranny. We must not return to the plutocracy that existed in 2016; we must continue the battle to restore our imperfect democracy that has been aspiring to reach the goal of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all people. We must not be lulled into complacency, thinking that the defeat of Donald Trump and his lackies will solve all our problems. Donald Trump is NOT the cause of our problems; he is the horrifying consequence of the descent of America from democracy into plutocracy. A friend drove me to the No Kings rally at the Connecticut State House in March where I sat in my walker for a couple of hours. It felt good. The crowd gave me new hope. Be well.
