When you require a bachelor’s degree for your job posting, you eliminate 76% of Black workers, 83% of Latinx workers, 81% of rural workers, and almost 70% of veterans from talent pools. This means, that more than 70 million workers in America- or 50% of the population hit #thepaperceiling, the barrier that comes at every turn for workers without a bachelor’s degree. But they shouldn’t- as employers often report that STARs (workers Skilled Through Alternative Routes instead of a bachelor's degree) perform nearly or equally well as those with degrees. As Blair Corcoran de Castillo (@OpptyatWork), @RosenblumElyse (@gradsoflife ), and Nitzan Pelman (Climb Hire) note to Emily McCrary-Ruiz-Esparza in Quartz, employers should reevaluate degree requirements and update their hiring practices to focus on skills in order to navigate the future of work. We must #TearThePaperCeiling to let STARs shine. qz.com/companies-can-drop-de…

For employers, the advantages of a skill-based hiring approach are many. When employers prioritize skills over-generalized education, they open their talent pool to a larger and more diverse set of applicants. @activate_work @helenyounghayes @debbiebrownco ow.ly/qvcz50OXjUs

Only 10% of STARs (workers Skilled Through Alternative Routes) are in high-paying jobs at the top of their field. 32M have the skills to move up, but they are often blocked by unnecessary BA screens. We must #TearThePaperCeiling to open up more paths to mobility for STARs.
