"The Conversations Medical School Never Prepared Us For! 👩🏽⚕️"
Who cares for the #women who care for others? 💭
Inspired by Women in #PalliativeCare #Switzerland (#WIPS), a movement born at #Geneva University Hospitals (HUG), where women #physicians in #PalliativeCare come together to share the realities of balancing their professional responsibilities, personal lives, and everything they were never prepared for in #medical school.
@acreolglobal brought this inspiration to #Rwanda! 🇷🇼🇨🇭
For the first time, we gathered young women studying #medicine, #pharmacy, and public health for an open, honest, and inspiring conversation, guided by Dr. Elke Stenfert, a palliative care physician from the #Netherlands. 🇳🇱
And one thing became clear: Behind every white coat is a #woman with a story that deserves to be heard. 💜
From unspoken pressures to personal struggles, laughter, and shared experiences, this gathering reminded us that sometimes, the most important conversation is the one we haven't had yet.
Thank you to Lisa Hentsch and the #WIPS team for inspiring this initiative. We look forward to welcoming you to #Rwanda for another chapter of these meaningful conversations! 🇷🇼✨
Because caring for others should never mean forgetting ourselves. 💜

Today, we don't just treat pain. We treat the whole person.
On World Hospice & Palliative Care Day 2026, MEDSAR Rwanda joins the global community under the theme: "𝑷𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕: 𝑨𝒏 𝑬𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝑷𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒆."
Pain is not just physical. It is psychological. It is social. It is spiritual. True palliative care means addressing total pain — walking with patients and families through every dimension of suffering with dignity, compassion, and skill.
As Rwanda's future doctors, we are committed to:
✅ Re-emphasizing holistic pain management
✅ Providing compassionate end-of-life care
✅ Ensuring no patient suffers alone
✅ Building a health system where dignity is non-negotiable
Today, we honor the caregivers, healthcare workers, and families who hold hands, offer comfort, and remind us that healing is not always about curing.
Pain management is not optional. It is essential. It is care.

From Lived Experience to Evidence-Based Care 🇷🇼🔬
What does recovery mean when symptoms persist long after the illness?
New research published in BMJ Open (@BMJ_Open) explores the lived experiences of people with PASC (Long COVID) across Rwanda, highlighting:
🩺 Diagnostic uncertainty and limited recognition of PASC
💼 Loss of work and income linked to persistent symptoms
🧠 Emotional and psychosocial challenges
🏘️ The need for context-appropriate, community-based support
❤️ Reduced quality of life
These findings resonate with palliative care’s holistic approach to suffering and quality of life, reinforcing the importance of care informed by patients’ lived experiences.
Congratulations to Iliza Grace Ndatinya (@ughe_org), Dr. Simal Thind (@JeffersonUniv), Dr. Fernand Rwamwejo (@RwandaHealth), and all who contributed to this research and the evidence for better care in Rwanda.
