CFS is a commercial company, but as a spinoff of MIT our roots are in academia, and we maintain close ties with the university and lab experts whose decades of research made our company possible. This week @CFS_energy physicists will be meeting with many of the top experts in our field at an annual conference called APS-DPP to share our latest work on turning that research into a practical fusion power plant.
It’s important to keep these connections. Outside experts, whether just chatting at our booth or formally collaborating with us, are the first people who are going to spot problems with our approach or validate when we’re on the right track. It takes a lot to make a fusion demonstration machine like our SPARC tokamak and its successor, the ARC power plant, but the first challenge is getting the plasma physics right, and the openness of talking, collaborating, and publishing research helps tackle that challenge.

This week, many of the brightest minds in the field of fusion physics gather at an annual conference to discuss the remarkable physical process that lets us develop a new source of clean, abundant energy. At the event, Commonwealth Fusion Systems experts will bring a new subject of conversation: details about how we plan to operate SPARC, our fusion demonstration machine.
SPARC is about 80% complete. Its first job is to generate net fusion energy — called Q>1 in scientific circles. That means producing more power from the fusion process than it takes to heat up the fusion fuel, called a plasma, so that fusion occurs. It’s difficult, with only one machine in the world reaching this performance level. At CFS, we expect to be the second to reach Q>1, and we’ve begun detailed planning on the best way.
“Because SPARC is designed to run well beyond Q>1, we have lots of room to maneuver as we operate the machine,” said Clayton Myers, Interim Director of Diagnostics at CFS, who’s slated to discuss our Q>1 approach at the American Physical Society’s Division of Plasma Physics meeting (APS-DPP). “Part of the reason we’re confident SPARC will meet this early performance goal is because we have different paths to success.”
You can read more about our plans, including two options for magnetic field strength, in our blog post about APS-DPP. The link is in the comments below.
Among other talks and poster sessions at the conference, we’ll also share our newest work designing the ARC power plant, the successor to SPARC. And we'll have plenty of folks at our booth, so if you’re attending, stop by and say hello.
