Why? Sure, say you aim not to, want to lower, intend to cut spending etc but if some unforeseen event happens that needs funding then I’d hope gov spends the necessary money and if that has to come from taxes, so be it. Hard to predict tomorrow, let alone the next 4 years!

The main deductions here are simply things gov has said it is going to spend the money raised on. Arguing that the gov is going to spend the money raised is different to not raising any money.
🧵1/13: This is how @UKLabour's estimated £1.7bn raised from private school-VAT quickly becomes £0 ⬇️ Today, the OBR has revealed that Labour's estimate does not include any additional state spending resulting from the policy. That means it does not account for additional...

Don’t know about others but Thames water has done a fine job of making no profit on its own. Indeed, value written down to zero and deemed uninvestable by its shareholders hence needing to hike charges to survive

100% all of this 🧵. A couple of weeks ago I had a good chat with a senior gov MP about APIs and data infrastructure to improve public services through secure, privacy respecting data sharing. It can be done...
Lots of discussion about digital health records in the NHS today. Modernisation, and privacy. But here’s the thing — we DON’T need a massive new database. Here’s how we do it. 1/

I’m not at retirement yet and pre retirement poor too. Not just L&G tbf. Industry talk of better education etc to support outcomes seems premature. Need to get basics much better first.
I am sorry but my experience of L&G at retirement bears no resemblance to what I am seeing at #plsaannual24

If you fancy coming along, it would be lovey to see you. If you don't fancy it, why not retweet (in case someone you know does fancy it)? What I'm really saying is, please retweet – and please come. Thanks

I was one of them and you might think it’s impossible to make postcodes interesting but @Psythor proved you wrong.
People turned up in the rain to hear me talk for 45 minutes about postcodes!

Yikes. No pay rise and a needs improvement rating pretty devastating appraisal rating for most of us. Prison for the poorest performers would seem to justify significantly higher pay!
There are about 500,000 full time civil servants. Even taking the 5% figure, on this basis that means the former Business Secretary thinks around 25,000 civil servants should be in jail.

Stealing “a convent full of atheists” … must be able to get that into a change management meeting…
Replying to @Samfr
Impossible to imagine the Tories without infighting - it's so intrinsic to their being. It's like asking for a convent full of atheists.

When trying to solve a problem “is like turning around an oil tanker”, that suggests it’s going to take a very long time. But how long does it actually take? Story No.5 on this week’s @BBCRadio4 More or Less. bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0jppsl…

I'm saying it's wrong. And ludicrously embarrassingly so.
not saying this is wrong, just that it's what you'd come up with if you were asked to presume the absolute worst outcome from a policy that hasn't yet happened
