Some thoughts on Dan's first two points: (1) Sweet energy dense foods were rare in ancestrally relevant environments. and (2) Humans lack psychological mechanisms whose function is to curtail or inhibit consumption of sweet energy-dense foods when these are abundant.
😸"Evolutionary psychologists’ obsession with the uncanny visceral appeal of sweet foods (just search Steven Pinker’s oeuvre for the word ‘cheesecake’) is probably better analysed through the lens of Pierre Bourdieu than that of Charles Darwin."

Who quits? We analyzed 328,515 men’s pro tennis matches & showed a discontinuity: favorites in the match who've fallen behind are more likely to quit than underdogs. The burden of high expectations is real. Be gentle as you judge Olympic athletes, politicians, etc. journals.aom.org/doi/abs/10.… @Wharton #research

Such a genuine pleasure to receive commentaries on this. Many thoughtful and stimulating responses, including one fabulous piece about paleolithic team-sport. Hopefully my response will do all these justice.
Preprint alert! 📢
The appearance of symbolic material culture is often linked to the evolution of complex, 'modern' human minds.
In a new article for BBS, I reconsider this link, and argue that modern humans needn't leave any such evidence. A thread.

"A random half of panelists were shown a CV and only a one-paragraph summary of the proposed research, while the other half were shown a CV and a full proposal. We find that withholding proposal texts from panelists did not detectibly impact rankings."

Sexual combat is 400 million years old, according to researchers. Some species of ancient trilobites battled for mates with head-mounted tridents, not unlike the horns on modern dynastine beetles. In PNAS: ow.ly/YZpq50Mt6IV

Representative samples may be overrated.
A replication of 27 survey experiments (n = 101,745) finds that convenience samples overwhelmingly produce similar findings to representative samples. pnas.org/doi/full/10.1073/pn…
